First of all, I am 24yrs old as is my husband. We conceived our twins after going through fertility treatments. I am currently 24 weeks pregnant with boy/girl twins...we are VERY excited!!
Now, I have a question about picking a hospital...
    So, here is my situation:
I live in a smaller town, there is a hospital but the hospital has no NICU. They have delivered twins before, but I'm guessing not a huge amount of them before. This hospital will only let me deliver there if I am 36+ weeks. So, should I aim for delivering at this hospital or concider delivering at a hospital with a NICU...this hospital is an hour and a half away.

I'd want the hospital with the NICU ... just in case. We didnt have a choice .. mine had to have a NICU .. but if I had a choice .. I'd still want the NICU.

:wavey: and welcome to twinstuff! Congrats on your twins! :D

I would go for the hospital with a NICU in it, just to be on the safe side. I'm hoping you go past 36 weeks and have a uneventful pregnancy. :)

Hi and welcome to Twinstuff! Congrats on your twins. :yahoo:

I would also want a hospital that has a NICU, you just never know what is going to happen when pregnant with twins.

You can ask your OB, but I think most like you to plan to deliver at the local hospital. And if you go into labor or need to plan an induction/c-section before 36 weeks, they'll transport you to the hospital with the NICU. I was in the same situation and my OB told me to go to the local hospital first rather than drive to the NICU hospital no matter what. She considered it too risky to make the drive without getting checked out by the local L&D team first. (I ended up going to the local hospital and being transported to the hospital with the NICU by ambulance three times during my pg...PTL, etc. And I ultimately delivered there too.)

Thank you all for the welcome!!

Our local hospital does have a pretty good plan I think...they will transport me an hour and a half away if I need to before 36 weeks and the NICU hospital will send a transport team down if the babies need NICU time.

One thing to think about as well, I'm sure they will transport you and the babies if necessary, but be sure they are capable of stabilizing a premature baby ( and getting it ready for transport) if necessary.

Good thought, thank you. I will talk with my OB about this at my next appt.

Congratulations on your twins! I agree with PP, but then again I'm lucky to live in a town with 2 big hospitals. Hopefully you won't need the NICU anyway, right? so far so good! Welcome to TS!
