Hello all! I'm 8 weeks pregnant with twins, we just found out! I'm pretty nervous, my doctor seems to think this is awesome but that I'm going to be a mess. She told me only to gain 20-25 pounds total which is scary since I gained 28 with DD and she wasn't even 7 pounds even though they warned me of a huge baby for not listening to weight gain suggestions. I'm 4'10" and I'm 40 pounds overweight. I want to work as long as possible but I'm doing lots of research on how to avoid bedrest... and apparently nobody knows!

Anybody have any tips and suggestions on how to handle a pregnancy of twins at my size and still have babies that are as big as they should be? I'm worried if I follow their weight gain restriction then the babies will be sooo tiny.

I can't relate to the weight issue because I'm 5'9" and was well within normal weight range when I got pregnant with the twins. However, a friend of mine with a singleton (not sure how tall she is) was overweight when she got pregnant, by a lot. She actually lost weight while she was pregnant and still delivered a very healthy baby boy. So there is hope.

Just try and stick to your doctors orders and stay off the net, it'll scare you if you're not careful and extra stress isn't good for babies!

Good luck on your pregnancy and congrats!!

Congrats on your twin pregnancy!! :babyflips: :babyflips:

I am 5'2 and was normal weight range, I gained 50lbs, I know it varies depending on where you're at starting out but I think as long as you are eating healthy and taking care of yourself your body will gain or not gain what its supposed to. Try not to stress about that too much. Everything will be great!

As for avoiding bedrest, sometimes its just out of your control...but if bedrest is something you do have to deal with you wont have to do it alone, we have a subforum just for that!!

Glad you're here, and good luck with everything!!

Congrats and welcome to TS! I am 5'5" and I gained 20lbs with the twins. They were 6lbs 9oz and 5lbs 2oz born at 37 weeks. So it can be done!

Becareful, YOu need to gain plenty of weight with twins even if you start overweight. It makes for bigger, healthier babies. Read When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, and Quads. It has lots of great advice.

Congratulations!! My only advice is not to google anything!!!! Come on here and ask all your questions, the ladies are amazing and full of advice and wisdom! And the great thing is that everyone is positive and have amazing stories/pregnancies/births!

    I was about 15lbs over weight (due to the IVF meds - um....thanks) and I delivered at 38.5 weeks (induction) and had a 5lb 14oz and a 6lb 8oz babies. I gained 30lbs total.

Thank you for the replies! I think I am going to simply eat when I'm hungry and try to make good choices. I don't know if I can lose my weight while gaining baby weight, but I can be careful at least. I'm training for the Atlanta Susan G. Komen 3 Day, which is 4 weeks from today. Exhaustion is limiting my walking, but this weekend is supposed to be 18 miles tomorrow and 15 Sunday. I will probably walk 12 miles tomorrow and 10 miles Sunday, to lunch each time. I won't worry too much about what I eat tomorrow and will enjoy my s'mores at night while we camp out. :)

    Welcome!
I am not able to eat large meals and fruit sounds really good to me a lot of times, so I eat when Im hungry and usually smaller amounts. I have actually gained less weight this time than I did when I was at this point with my daughter. I have gained nine lbs so far!

I walked 17 out of 33 miles, yay! I'm really sore and tired, but I did it.

I think your best bet is going to be to make every bite count - and make every bite as high in protein as you can. Protein is what's going to pack the weight onto the babes - carbs are just going to pack the weight onto YOU. So high protein/high iron foods and you'll likely do just fine! :)

Ugh, do you think that will work if I start in a few weeks? I can't seem to keep down much meat... might need to hard boil a dozen eggs or something.

try cottage cheese- HIGH in protein, peanut butter and other nuts too.....I ate very little meat when pregnant, but jars and jars of peanut butter and cartons of cottage cheese....YUM, both are bland enough to not bother your stomach, but high in protein! Also some boost shakes and the like are good for supplementing (I drank a few a day toward the end when I really had bad heartburn and could eat little).

    Hi Sara!

    Welcome to TS!

Meat can be hard to stomach at first... if you start with something you do eat fairly well then move to meat it is easier. (Of course, my boys made me into such a carnivore I could smell raw steak and salivate, but I digress).

I agree with this....I bought this book per suggestion of a friend of mine who had twins and it has a great section on weight gain and meal plans. It also has alot of other great info for keeping your babies in as long as possiable.

good Luck and welcome to TS!

I am 4'11'' I gained 50lbs with the girls I started off at 135lbs so I was pretty big when I delivered. I carried my girls to 31wks 5 days they were early but one wieghed 4lbs and the other 3lbs 15 oz so pretty good size for thier gestational age. make sure you get plenty to eat and drinks LOTS of water. I drank ensure to make sure I was getting enough protein. Eat when ever you are hungry but try your best to make healthy choices and make every bite count
