Which one do you like better and why? We are cutting the cord with DirecTV shortly and I'm trying to pick one. We'll have access to some cable channels through Sling (ESPN, AMC, Food, etc).
I do have Netflix streaming and I love their original content shows (Orange is the New Black, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and looking forward to Daredevil which starts Friday). So my vote is for Netflix. I never used Hulu Plus, but I believe that one is good to get some currently airing network shows on. Some networks, I believe CBS and HBO are starting their own streaming channels too. Netflix does have a wide variety of kids programming too,I can't forget to add that!
We do both. We got rid of cable two years ago and haven't looked back! Netflix is good for original content, and many many shows, but I love Hulu Plus for all the current shows we watch. They stream through our apple TV, or we can access them on our devices (laptop, phone, iPads).
We have both. We are biiiig Netflix users. I rarely use Hulu Plus, but it comes in handy if I miss a current show (I don't actually watch very many current shows), since we have no way to record shows. We realized back in the VCR era that we'd record stuff and then never find time to watch it, so we never bothered to get a DVR.
We just went through this, and personally, for us, since we didn't get very many over the air channels, dropping cable was not worth it. We missed local news, Wheel of Fortune, NHL Network, and Jeopardy. I really had no idea how much I watched the local news until all we had was the CNN app on Sling and how it didn't have anything local outside of politics. So no traffic, no weather, no what schools are out because of the weather etc. Yes there are ways around that, but when it's 4:30 in the morning, it's not my favorite thing to get online to find out what I need to wear or if the school is opening on time when I could be eating breakfast and watching tv at the same time. In my experience, Netflix doesn't have much current (as in this year's shows) on streaming, and my limited experience with Hulu is that it has a limit to the count of current shows it carries. So if you wanted to pick up a new show, you better start watching it within 5 episodes of the beginning. Plus with the adjustment in our internet rate from unbundling everything, it negated any real savings. ETA: We ended up watching a TON of Food Network. So Alice thinks she's a connoisseur now.
NETFLIX is my pick. I love that I can set my kids up with their own profile and they can watch their own shows with out cloging my feed.
Bex, have you considered getting a regular tv antenna? You live in a real city, it would probably be worth it. That way you could still get the local stations and not pay for cable. I don't know what you're living situation is, if you can have an antenna, etc. I would look into it if I were you. We would do it here but we can't have an antenna (Damn you HOA!!) and could only get one or two channels anyway. We have Netflix and the kids have their own profiles. So Josh's Curious George, Mulan, and Handy Manny don't show up on my stuff. And my HGTV shows don't show up on his or my husband's!. :laughing: We have considered adding Hulu Plus just because it's so inexpensive, but we haven't gotten around to it yet. Kate are you sure that you can't get an antenna? I seem to remember that about 10 years ago, it was no legual for HOA to forbid antennas or dishes/
Kate, we have an antenna. It got a bunch of non-English channels and PBS. I could watch 6 different Spanish channels, 4 Korean channels, 3 Chinese channels, 3 Russian Channels, a Polish channel and 4 different PBS channels. It didn't get ABC/CBS/NBC.
Bex - that's kinda bizarre! I don't know enough about it advise you further so uhm... learn Spanish? Lisa, we can have a dish/antenna on the house but it has to be on the back so you can't see it from the street. But for us to get any channels, we'd have to have an antenna at least 30 feet in the air which we can't have. We're not even allowed to have flag poles in our yards or birds nests on poles (in the front anyway). We live in the middle of nowhere. Seriously, when we are in a position where we know we aren't moving again, I will never live with an HOA again.
I ordered Hulu plus but am ambivalent to it and will add Netflix when our sling subscription is over. Unless it's football or basketball season, I don't need sling.
