Neither twin will drink water, any advice?

At my boys 6 month check up, their ped advised that they drink a few ounces of water a day but since they were 6 months and until today neither will drink water. :nea: I have tried warming it, putting it in a bottle as well as a sippy cup and it doesn't work. They won't drink diluted juice, which I am not worried about anyway since they don't truely need it. But has anyone had that problem? Any ideas how I can get them to drink water or do they eventually drink it anyway? Thanks for any advice! :thanks: :babyflips:

Honestly, unless you are in a climate that is very hot right now, all they need is breastmilk/formula and starting solids. You can certainly offer some after solids, but they should be getting enough hydration with breastmilk/formula. They will eventually drink it. Kids often need to try things many times to get a taste for it. I would not be too concerned that they are not drinking it right now. Watch their output, if you are having dry diapers throughout the day, then they need to drink more, but if you are having multiple wet diapers throughout the day, they are fine. HTH!

Oh gosh - at six months? I think your pedi is a bit early. If you can get your kids to drink the water, that's great. But if not, don't stress and try again in a few months. I don't think my girls drank water until 10 months or so and we live in a hot and dry climate.

I agree-they don't really need water yet. I would suggest to just continue offering it with snacks and/or meals. They'll drink it when they need it.

You can try different kinds of cups - my kids would only drink from straw cups until they were well over a year old. But I agree with the others - they don't really need it at this point unless you are somewhere extremely hot and worried about hydration.

ITA with everyone else...there is no need for it so I wouldn't push it. Just use the water to help them learn the sippy cup:) You may have to try several different ones to find one they like:)

Thank you everyone, that was actually adivce given from my old ped. We have switched to a new one from the same clinic that I think is better. I will keep trying but we live in cold upstate New York, and diapers have always been normal. Thanks for the great advice!

If you haven't tried straw sippies I would try those but holy cow I think your ped is jumping the gun. When we started water it was like 8 or 9 months and I just gave them the cup and if they drank fantastic if not no biggie

I agree that they do not need it yet. I can't remember how early I started giving it -- not at 6 months, somewhere around 9 months or after just for practice. They didn't want anything to do with it for a long time and couldn't figure out the sippies. I just kept giving it and like so many other things, one day they figured it out and started drinking it. Surprisingly, they still get pretty excited when I fill their water bottles.
