I read the thread about cradle cap here a few weeks ago. I tried the different things on my baby. It seems like it works for a day or two and then comes right back. Can anyone give me more specific directions on how to get rid of it for good? Or is it normal for it to keep coming back?

For those of you who have dealt with cradle cap and successfully gotten rid of it can you tell me how you did it?

My poor baby has such a flaky head.

ETA: By more specific I mean can you tell me what you used to get rid of it and then how often did you bathe your baby and wash his/her hair?

Mine had it for quite a while. I would just put oil on their scalp every few weeks, let it sit for as long as I could manage without getting oil everywhere and then use their baby brush to brush it off and wash it out. But it never completely went away until.. I can't remember, but it was a couple of months.

So were you only washing their hair every couple of weeks or were you washing in between the times you used the oil?

My 14 month olds still have cradle cap. I could use advice on this, too!

I used dandruff shampoo, head & shoulders, because my ped recommended it. I used it for a couple of weeks maybe 2-3 times a week. The Johnson & Johnson no more tears shampoo dried my kids' heads out and made it worse.

The only thing that worked for me was a product with a Disney label (like pooh on it or something) in a green bottle called cradle cap care. I used that and didn't up how often I shampooed, and it went away.

I put vaseline on it, washed the rest of the body to let the vaseline absorb a bit then I would wash the hair, you have to scrub a bit where the vaseline was. I bathed my kids 2-3 time a week. I think it took a 3 or 4 bathes for it to be gone completely and it never came back

My girls fight with it too....but I successfully get rid of it. Although it wants to show up every now and then. When they were smaller it would come every week.

I use straight baby oil on their heads. While they are in the tub, I put some on their scalp and kindof brush it in to be sure it's soaking their scalp. Then after it sits for a few minutes I take a fine comb (the kind that comes in the kits with baby hairbrushes in it) and kindof scrape their head with it....it comes off VERY easily!!!! By "scraping" I mean, just kinda rub the comb in their head...it doesn't hurt. Then wash their head with regular baby shampoo to get the oil off. Their first 3-4 months I did this every bath which was about every 3 days. Now I do it about once/month just to be sure it's not coming back. I HATE CRADLE CAP!!!

Hi, I had posted about the cradle cap a few weeks ago and what finally worked was the Aveno Eczema Therapy. I bought it at Target and used it on his head and also anywhere else he had signs of eczema or dry patches of skin and after a few days it was gone and hasn't returned. I also started using the J&J Baby Wash with Baby Oil. I guess it's something new but definitely helped with moisturizing their skin. I would use it instead of the baby shampoo. I hope this helps! Good Luck!

That's what we used, too. It's called something like Natural Care or something like that, and yes, it has Pooh on the label. We used it whenever cradle cap appeared, then brushed a lot afterward with a soft brush. That would usually take care of it for a week or so. We washed their hair about once a week at that age.

My SIL used dark olive oil for my nephew and found that that worked well for him.

We live in Arizona - dry country - and our girls have eczema and one had cradle cap. We were told to bathe them every other day for 40 minutes in luke warm water for the eczema - the long baths actually help moisture to soak into their skin. At the start of the bath, we rubbed olive oil into the head of the twin with cradle cap using a soft tooth brush. Then we let them play for the remainder of the bath and washed their hair at the end. The humid air helped the oil soak in. After time was up (or the water started getting cold), we washed the oil out using California Baby Tea Tree and Lavender shampoo and bodywash - it is forumlated for dry skin and cradle cap. Sometimes we had to wash her hair twice because she was super greasy. But, sometimes we just left her greasy. Believe it or not, the olive oil would actually soak in and she'd be less greasy a day later. We have kept up with the shampoo even though the cradle cap has disappeared, but we don't olive oil them anymore.

Just to be clear- I need to first baste the babies and then steam them? ;)

I read this to my husband before leaving the house and his feedback was "sounds delicious!"

Royce was always my cradle cap kid, and I too used the Pooh labeled stuff, it's like a cross between aquaphor and straight up baby oil. Then scrubbed it with a soft brush. Then repeated for a few months.

Now he has a huge scaly dry patch on his head (just like me!) and I just don't know what to do aside from starting to use medicated shampoos for long term control.

Our DS had it bad but also had eczema. We went to a specialist after trying everything. He said to soak him for 5 min in warm water and only use Cetaphil for washing (you don't even have to wash it off). Then, lather him in Vaseline. In one day, it was gone! No joke! We now use Vaseline every day-all over his hair, etc and his head and skin are perfect!

Baby oil on the head, wait a little bit, use a soft brush and try to brush if off. You can wash the hair afterwards. Repeat every 2-3 days until it completely goes away.

I agree with the mom who used the Disney Product. It's called Gentle Naturals Cradle Cap and I bought mine at Babies R Us. However, I did see it in the baby aisle at Walmart a couple of weeks ago. Both of my girls had cradle cap and it took 3 applications to get rid of it. I did it two days in a row, then skipped a couple of days and did it again. It's been several days now and it hasn't come back.

I also used this on my now 3 year old when she was a baby and it worked for her too.

    Good luck!

Oh, and I applied it, rubbed it in and used a soft brush in a circular motion for a couple of minutes. Then I just rinsed and washed again with regular baby shampoo.
