Need to Know if others have been on this many drugs while pregnant

So my week has not been nice to me. I have PUPPS all over my stomach, an abscessed tooth they thought was a pregnancy tumour which required multiple x-rays, and now an allergic reaction to the penicillin for the tooth abscess. I am currently on erythromycin for infection, tylenol 3 for pain, and a cortisone cream for my stomach. I am concerned that all these drugs aren't good for my babies. Did anyone else have to take drugs like this while they were pregnant? In my entire life, I haven't take this many prescriptions and it upsets me that during a vital period like pregnancy that I am now required to do so. I have this immense fear that I'm hurting my babies.

I'm not a doctor, but I would think that an infection would be even worse for the babies!

I can understand your concern, but I don't think your OB would prescribe anything that would possibly hurt your babies. (Except maybe the X-rays, but it sounds like there was a much worse possibility that they had to rule out.) I'm also not a doctor, but my understanding (IIRC) is that there is a little more latitude during the 3rd trimester because the babies are not as susceptible to the effects of whatever drugs you may be taking. My OB even let me take Ambien for 1 night (which is generally not recommended during pregnancy) when I was in the hospital for preterm labor and said it would not hurt anything. Also, I agree, an infection is probably a bigger danger to your babies than the antibiotics themselves.

But I'm sorry you're having such a rotten week.

I was much earlier in pregnancy (I delivered at 35 1/2 weeks) - but at 16 weeks I had general anesthesia, morphine, fentanyl, percocet, indocin, and nifidipine (later for preterm labor).

And so far my kiddos aren't drug addicts (although they do like their Motrin when teething!)

I would trust your Dr. They will do what is best for you and the babies, weighing risks for each.

I was on Antibiotics & blood pressure meds from the start of my pregnancy and throughout the whole thing.

Then also took terbutaline, nifidipine, diflican, erythomican, magnesuim sulfate, tylonel, and steriods while pregnant.

My girls are just fine! I often talked to my pharmacist and Peri about all of the stuff I took and in my case- the result of not taking the meds were more harmful than the meds themselves. BUT some things are OK during different trimesters.

    Hope you feel better soon!

Most moms on the Specail Care OB Unit at the hospital I work at take Ambien once a day, a lot are on magnesium sulfate. I was on Ambien, Brethine, Phergan and Benadryl. My kids are fine. I know it seems like a lot but it is safe. At 35 weeks they are safer than babies at only 6 or 7 weeks of pregnancy. Good luck, hope you feel better!

My peri worries far more about what's in my prenatals and vitamins than which drugs. As he says, the drugs are all "knowns" as far as what they will do, or else they won't use them. The "vitamins" and "minerals" as well as the binders and additives put in them are not checked by anyone! Because I was ready to freak when they put me on blood thinners and blood pressure modifiers.... but as he said, they know what they do in pregnancy... you wouldn't be a mommy if you weren't worrying about what is best!

    Hugs,
    Dominique

I was given antibiotics for a UTI, Vicoden for a subluxation in my shoulder, Zofran for morning sickness and later in my pregnancy Procardia for PTL along with Magnesium Sulfate, T3, Colace, benadryl, Phernergan and ambien for sleep...as long as you are taking everything as prescribed by your OB I would assume that it is ok

Just a ditto that I was on a lot of meds in my third tri too. I had multiple chest x-rays, a CT scan and even had a lung scan where they put radioactive stuff in my bloodstream. I know the radioactive stuff crossed the placenta as I had to sign a consent form that said so. It's all about weighing the benefits against the risks. And your doctors think the benefits outweigh the risks right now.

(Although I do get scared that my twins will get cancer from all the radiation and radioactive exposure. I just try not to worry about it and remember that it's out of my hands anyway.)

Like the pp said, I'm sure the doc knows what they're prescribing you, esp when its so obvious that u're preggy!! Then again, if the meds are given by some GPs, I'd usually double check online with www.mims.com to be sure.

I am sorry for what you're going through; PUPPS sounds horrific.

I was on various drugs during both my pregnancies. Percocet and antibiotics for weeks 34-37 during my twin pregnancy. All three of my boys are completely healthy and none of them had any NICU time.

Thanks for all your reassurance. I haven't had any relief from the PUPPS and my doctor said it's a very bad case, so I am now on prednisone. I guess it's just one more drug to add to the list. As he said, he'd rather the babies stay in for another three weeks and be exposed to a small dosage of prednisone than have me deliver early due to the PUPPS. I am trying my best to trust him. Thanks for listening.
