For those of you who live in cold climates what snow boots do you usually buy for your kiddos. This is the first winter that the kids will be old enough to go outside and play in the snow and I am clueless about what will be the best boots for them. I def want to get something pretty good quality as nothing ruins fun in the winter more than cold feet.

Any suggestions would be very appreciated?

Well, no snow for us here, which is one less thing to worry about! I used to buy them at Target, they looked like fake UGGs, in tan and pinkish, very comfy, warm with a zipper on the side. They also looked very cute with a skirt, quite stylish ;)!. My oldest could easily put them on herself from age 2 1/2. I bought them 2 or 3 years in a row. Otherwise, look at LL Bean or something.

Check out Sierratradingpost.com. They have super deals on kids' boots! I was shopping for hiking boots myself but saw some really nice snow boots too (even some Sorel Sneaky Pete's comfort rated to -40... now that's a warm boot!) FWIW, we used to live in MN and I get cold feet easily. I found the puffy "moon boot" kind warmer and lighter than the sleeker rubber pac style BUT if you get moderate cold where you live and a lot of wet, heavy snow, I'm sure the rubber toes are a plus.

For really playing in the snow (as opposed to just walking to the car or staying warm), they need to be waterproof.

Other than that, I think the most important factors are that the boots go at least to mid-calf and that they have a drawstring or pull-cord at the top. We had two pairs of Kamik hand-me-down boots last year, one with a pull-cord (Sarah's) and one without (Amy's). Sarah's feet and ankles stayed dry, while Amy's were constantly packed with snow, even when her snowpants came down over the tops of her boots.

UGGs are cute, but no good for real snow IMO.

You didn't ask, but FWIW, it's also important for their snowpants to have two layers at the bottom -- an elasticized cuff to go inside the boot, and a loose-fitting outer layer with snaps or a zipper that goes over the boot.

I agree with Alden, definitely get waterproof boots. :good: I usually buy my kids' boots at Target and have been happy with them. :good:

  7. Mountain Equipment Co-op sells awesome winter boots for kids and adults: suitable for cold weather, water-proof, some even have drawstrings at the calf to keep out the snow. There are stores located across Canada, or you can order online at www.mec.ca.

Ditto all of what Alden said. FWIW, we got waterproof boots at Target last year and they kept the girls' feet dry and toasty while playing in the snow.

We lived in the northern arctic for years & love Sorel boots. I had light ones (-40) & my real ones Glaciers are good to -100F. I am a no socks kind of girl & never got cold feet when I wore them.

Love them for my kids as well. You can browse them at www.sorel.com

We have bought these for DS and these for DD. They are from famous footwear and we have been very happy with them. They are easy to put on and take off and have both a drawstring and velcro strap to keep them snug on their feet.

I just got my girls pink ones from Target.com with a fuzzy lining. They were buy one get one 1/2 off and free shipping if you bought $50 or more.

Last winter, I got my boys super cute boots that lit up & were name brand. They rarely wore them. Little kids don't last THAT long outside, so my cutsie boots got little use.

This year, I'm sure we'll be outside longer, but still not for super long periods of time (my boys were 2 in July, so they're still pretty little). I just picked up some from Target yesterday. They have various styles & are all reasonably priced. Mine are for -10 (who would take a kid out in -10?), so hopefully they'll keep their feet warm.

Now I need to find a place with nice, warm, quality snow pants!
