We like spanish / italian names, and have a 14 month old named Elena. We are 95% settled on Baby A being named Maria, but we continue to struggle with Baby B's name. We STRONGLY prefer to avoid another "M" name - can anyone help? ANY ideas are greatly appreciated!

    TIA!

My little blonde girl is named Rosalie. People have told me that's Spanish, even though the great-aunt she was named for was Dutch.

What fun! Here are some Italian baby girl names (and their meanings) I ran across beginning with the letter "M":

Madonna - My lady. From a title of the Virgin Mary.
Magenta - A colour name, after a town in Italy.
Majella - From the name of an Italian saint.
    Mariabella - My beautiful Mary.
Marietta - Bitter, as in a bitterly wanted child. Also - The star of the sea.
Marsala - A town, and a sweet fortified wine.
    Marta - Italian/Spanish. A lady.
    Mia - Mine

If you go this route, I would chose something that is recognizable where you live. Names likes Isabela or Gabriela would be good. NOTE: double LL is Italian, single L is Spanish. Isabella in Italian, Isabela in Spanish.

As for M names, I like:
    Marisol
Martiza (popular in Central America, but not in Spain or South America)
    Marcela

But I think my all-time favorite Spanish name, besides Gabriela, is Lourdes. It's just beautiful and elegant.
I also love Nadya (or Nadia). It's actually Russian or Slavic for hope, but it's semi-popular here in Ecuador.

Here's what my Baby Name wizard book says:

Sister names to Elena: Daniela, Elise, Sofia, Juliana, Leah

Sister names to Maria are: Angela, Teresa, Sonia, Michele, Diana

Names listed as both Italian and Latina:

    Bianca
    Caterina/Catarina
    Francesca/Francisca
    Giselle/Gisella
    Graziela/Graciela
    Liliana
    Luisa

    Maddalena/Magdalena
    Marcella/Marcela
    Margherita/Margarita
    Mirella/Miriela
Noemi - I LOVE this one - like a more exotic Naomi
    Silvia
    Valeria
    Viviana

The ones in bold were spelled the same for Italian and Spanish. The others show the variations between similar names. Hope this helps!

You could use either of my daughters' names, Gabriela and Bianca. We looked for names that would be equally pronouncible to both English and Spanish speakers.

    We also liked

    Graciela
    Daniela
    Isabela
    Catalina
    Cora
    Marisol (I know it's M but it's so pretty!)
    Cecilia

I'm partial to Sofia since one of our girls will be named that :) And with the "f" is the traditional Italian and Spanish way of spelling it.

    I also love Isabela

I once knew a woman named Maria Cecilia and her family called her Maricel. The names are beautiful separately and the combination is just as beautiful.

I think Cecilia is very pretty as well, but it actually means "blind."

I'm partial to Sofia (DD's name) spelled with an 'f' not a 'ph'. It drives me nuts when people misspell her name.
