Need help with DS

We started potty training DS about 4 weeks ago. He will go potty on the toilet fine, but we still are not quite to the point where he will initiate it himself. We are always having to remind him or make him go and if we don't he has an accident. Is this a sign that he is not ready? If so, should I stop the training? I am confused on what to do? Please help.

I really am not expert because my almost 4 yr old won't poop in the potty, but that's for another post...

All of my friends and family that have potty trained have spent months reminding and reminding and reminding their children to go to the potty. It seems perfectly normal to me to ask if they need to go or remind them it is time to visit the potty at least hourly in the begining. My son (who refuses to poop) will pee in the potty without constant reminding but only after nearly a year of doing quite a bit of reminding. They get so distracted and they do not want to stop playing to go to the bathroom no matter how bad they have to go! I say it's normal, so keep reminding and asking and dragging them to the potty to prevent the accidents and eventually they will know when they need to go all by themselves and they will tell you all about it! I think you are totally fine. It would do more harm than good to put him back in diapers at this point. Just keep reminding him and he will get it in time. I know Ben will be like this...he is the total stereotypical aloof male. He will always need someone telling him what to do.

 

Thanks ladies. We are sticking with it. While on vacation this weekend he actually told me a couple of times that he had to go-- so maybe it is starting to sink in...
