    Hi,
Is this normal? DD & DS had their 1 year shots a week ago today we had delayed them. They got MMR/Chick Pox/Flu Shots.
Now for the past couple of days DD hasn't really been eating much just drinking alot. Now this evening she's real fussy & running a 102.4 fever.
Is this a normal reaction to the shots? Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do? I just gave her motrin. Now I can rotate motrin & tyl. right?
How many hours between the two is it?

Thanks For Any Help you can lend!!!

Yes you can rotate between motrin and tylenol, but I usually just give motrin every six hours and it does the trick. It takes about an hour to break the fever, esp if it is high. In the meantime, if you want to get her cooled down you can either put her in a bath of luke warm water (not cold, you don't want her to get chilled) and run some water over her and let it evaporate off. Or you can strip her down to a diaper and either spritz her with a bit of room temp water or use a damp cloth over her and sit under a ceiling fan. The second one is the one that works fastest for brining the fever down quick, but some don't like the idea of it I guess. My brother is an ER physician and this is his tried and true advice.

As for the shots causing the fever at this point, I don't know. Did they give you the sheets from the ped when they got their shots? It usually says on there how long you may experience effects from the shots. We've had a couple bugs around here and I know a lot of folks have been sick. It sounds about right to have picked up a bug when you were at the doctor and now be at the height of it.

I hope everyone feels better soon at your house!

Honestly, 102.4 isn't that high for a toddler, it's considered a moderate fever. I'd just do what I could to keep her comfortable...lots of fluids, eat whatever will give her some calories that she's interested in and sleep. If it is from the shots, she may get a rash in the next few days but again, nothing to worry about. If the fever lasts more than a few days or spikes and won't come down with motrin, then I'd call and have her seen. It's most likely just a virus going around and in another few days she'll be back to normal. Give her extra cuddles!

If it doesn't come down for some reason then, what is considered high? at at what point should I be concerned?
Right now it's been almost an hour and it hasn't come down but, hasn't gotten any higher.

Sorry, I went to watch House after that post and didn't get back on!

If she's just acting a bit off, tired and not too hungry, I'd get concerned close to 104. If her fever doesn't go up at all but all of a sudden she's very lethargic, glassy eyed, hard to rouse, etc then I'd be worried. With kids, their behavior is a much better indicator of the illness than a fever is. Sometimes I don't medicate under 103 if they aren't too uncomfortable, that way the fever can do it's job in the body faster. Hopefully she slept well and is feeling better this morning! Always err on the side of caution and follow your mommy gut. If you think something is really wrong, don't hesitate to take her in. Just be prepared for them to say it's a virus or a mild reaction to the shots and you just have to wait it out. If she does get the spots too, I would at least call the doc and let them know since they are supposed to keep track of any reactions to immunizations.

    THanks for the replies!
Her fever went down to a 100 before I put her to bed last night. I held her most of the evening and she didn't want to do anything except be held.
She slept through the night and neither one has woken up yet this morning must be the cold weather they are wanting to sleep in.
I appericate the replies and I'll let you know what's going on this morning and if I have any problems.

    Thanks Again & Happy Thanksgiving!

**Update & Back From Dr's Appt!**
When she woke up this morning her fever was 104 and a rash with little red bumps and splotches so, I called and got her in to see the Dr(since I knew it was a holiday weekend and the office was going to be closed!) They said she is most likley having a reaction to the MMR shot and to watch her closely.
I'm praying she will feel better tomorrow for Turkey day :)

Thanks Everyone for reading & posting.

    Happy Thanksgiving!
