help!!! dd woke up saturday morning with diarrhea and a really red diaper rash, no new foods or anything new. she's had a runny nose and cough all week, as well as teething. saturday she had diarrhea all day long. we used our pinxav diaper rash cream all day, and had multiple 30min to 1hr time periods where we let her go without a diaper, but then she'd pee and when the pee touched the rash, which is now all over her labia as well, she'd just grab herself and scream! she's only slept an hour tonight, then woke up screaming when she peed. we gave her a bath in baking soda water and let her soak in it for an hour yesterday, have tried putting cornstarch on it and that only made her scream worse til i washed if off with soap and water. right now, she is without a diaper and is finally not screaming. but has anyone ever taken their baby to the ER for a diaper rash?? i've been giving her tylenol as well as benadryl to try to make it better but it's not working. what kind of options can the ER do for a diaper rash? anyone been through this? she is fair skinned and has the most sensitive skin too. other dd has this rash too and they've both been miserable for 24 hrs, but other dd is olive skinned and has been sleeping all night. so i'm thinking the sensitive skin is just making it worse. anyway, what can i do??? thanks in advance!

Your DD sounds like my DD. She has sensitive skin and is prone to bad diaper rash like that. It's no fun. You are doing the right thing in letting her air dry, I have also used a very thick coating of aquaphor and then topped that with either triple paste or Burts Bees diaper cream (sometimes I put the mixture right on the diaper rather then the butt itself). My SIL recommended milk of magnesia but I have not tried that yet. If she is continuing to scream like that and not sleep well, I would call your pedi for some suggestions.

    Poor girl!

I have found desitin original to work the best, with a coat of vaseline or aquaphor over it.
I would also let her air dry as much as possible, and don't use wipes, use a warm wet washcloth with no soap to wipe her.

    Good luck!

We use Aquaphor or hydro cortisone ointment (not cream which has alcohol in it) with a layer of Desitin original over top. The first works as kind of a barrier to keep any wetness from irritating her further. I hope you little one feels better soon. Poor baby!

Personally, I'm not sure of how much hydrocortison cream (even ointment) I'd use as it's a steriod and causes drying. I have had skin allergies since I was 5, so I know. If you must use one, try the moisturizing hydrocortisone with aloe. There have been so many times I haven't healed completely because I was itching from dry skin.

That being said, my girls are allergic to almost all diaper rash creams out there. I wouldn't let the rash try to heal on it's own since it's so severe. But it definitely needs something to block urine - vaseline helps for us. I remember rashes that wouldn't go away for weeks and we really had to be persistent. Still one of them started to bleed a little. That was when they were much much younger and we've been able to tackle and clear them in about a week now a days.

The bacteria from the bowel movements as well as the stomach acid seem to be the way my girls get their rashes, and very quickly. I'd find out if there is a way to help resolve the diarrhea (BRAT foods?), change very often, pat dry with a warm wet washcloth (clean one each time), let air dry completely (we'd fan or pat with a dry cloth to help speed it along), but when it comes to what to put on them - I alternate or mix between Butt Paste and vasaline. Sometimes I will splash some cornstarch on top to keep it from wiping off in the diaper so fast. If you don't see an improvement in a few days, consider the other kinds of rashes it could be, yeasty, allergy? That's when i'd consider using something that's either for the yeast or the allergy.

I have heard raving reviews of the milk of magnesia working, Its something I'm going to use next time they begin to have a rash from diarrhea, stomach acid is stomach acid so if it helps the tummy and intestines, why not!

When my girls butts where that bad I took them to the dr. and he prescribed Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream. It worked pretty fast. You apply 2x a day and in between I usually apply desitin.

You could try putting some Maalox or other antacid on it to help calm it down from the acidity of the diarhea. That was a recommendation from one our pediatric nurses. The other thing we have found is a barrier cream called Calmoseptine. I get it at the pharmacy counter at one of our grocery stores here. They are actually starting to use this cream at the nursing home I work at b/c it is so much better than regular barrier creams. It has a numbing ingredient in it as well and is super thick. We have had to go to the Dr. for diaper rashes before when they've started to bleed or become yeasty. Poor thing, I hope she feels better soon.

our twin boy just went through awful diarrhea and diaper rash, it was red red red and bumpy and blistery....let him diaper free after every diaper change, for at least 30min....then applied Nystatin (yeast) 2x a day, the rest of the times, I would switch between triple paste and boudreau's butt paste...it does take about 1 week to clear....also soaked him in aveeno oatmeal bath, which soothed.
did pedi look at him? the nystatin definetely helped clearing it up faster.

Sudocreme- It is fantastic!! Anytime my girls have had a hint of a diaper rash I smear their butts with it and it's gone.

    Poor baby girl. :(
