Need desperate help with hair washing

Ever since they were infants, they scream and pull their head forward when I wet their hair and/or wash it. It's pure torture. I try to put toys up in the air so they look up, but then they quickly scream and pull their heads down and forward, so the water now goes down their face. I only use no-tears stuff, but it's still awful. And I hate it.
Any advice pleeeeease to make this more bearable?
    thanks! Kathleen

Maybe they just don't like water on their faces? I know I don't, it makes me feel like I'm drowning. Those hats work wonders.

We have this too. It works great. My friend uses the visor for her son and she says it works great!

I only had luck with them holding their heads up (looking up) and putting my hand there to block after they were 2 yrs. or so. I would totally get the hat! The bucket thing didn't work for me (the one with the soft spot to set on their foreheads). They wouldn't let me use it!

We always said "1 -2 -3" and let them know the water was coming.....

We used swim goggles for a while, but for that age, the visor looks like the answer!

At almost 24 months, mine are finally started to understand how to look up when I pour the water over their heads. I just hold my hand at the top of their forehead to try to keep some of the water off, but they still hate it. It helps a little if I tell them it's coming, and then tell them when I'm done.

I tried the visors and mine will not keep them on. I try to keep reinforcing to look up,but they didn't get that until they were about "2" or so. Mia still gives me a hard time with every single bath. What works best for her is she holds a washcloth over her eyes. It's the only way she doesn't cry.

To this day I have had to put a wash cloth over their face and be careful not to let water in their ears. Tub time could be so much more fun if I shave them bald.

I guess I am the mean one here. The first thing we do when we put them in the tub is soap them up from head to toe and then we dump 3 large cups full over their heads. We count each one. Then they have the rest of the time to play. At first they hated it and now they are cool and close thie eyes and count with us.

We have that shampoo cup suggested by a pp and I don't like it at all. One thing that has worked pretty well for us is a water bottle with a squirt cap. It allows us to rinse their hair using a very targeted flow. No water in the eyes or ears...

I always do their hair last as once that part of their body gets wet it seems they get cold faster (probably because their heads don't continue to be in the water like the rest of their body?)

This may not be the solution you are looking for but I actually changed my shower head to one that had a few different settings and one I could take down. I can literally put the shower head on their head and control the water intensity with placement and water setting that way. Life has been sooo much easier since I made that change.

we use the bath visors...mine love them! They say "hat, hat" and it totally keeps the water out of their eyes. I got them at BRU.

Nope not the only one :winking0009: . I don't do it at the beginning though, I wait until the end.

We do the dry washcloth over the eyes and try to have him look up. He is getting better at it.

Katelyn developed a sudden aversion to hair washing a few weeks ago. It's been a struggle since then. We were given the pitcher the pp linked to for their birthday and it has really helped. I hope it continues to work, but if it doesn't I'll be buying the visors. We used one with my niece and it was great-forgot about that since it seems so long ago.

We have one of these and it is ok. It works good, but my DD will still complain if she is just in one of those moods. A friend told me about using a visor/hat for the bath tub. She has one and said it works great, and her kids like to wear it too.

I bought this and I also give them a washcloth to hold over their faces, it cured the problem. Montana hated having her hair washed and now she tolerates it better.

I laid them down in the water on their backs... I always had only a couple of inches of water in the tub. So this worked OK. I would shampoo and rinse while they were lying down... good luck!

This is what I do with my toddler, too! We swim on the tummy while I lather up her hair, then we swim on the back while I rinse. Took me a while to get this figured out to distract her!!!

Mine both love having water dumped over their heads now, but it wasn't always this way. Elliot used to HATE it. I would wash his hair by using a wet washcloth (not even dripping wet) - I'd rub it on his head to get his hair damp, then shampoo, then wipe the suds out with a damp washcloth (that would have to be rinsed over and over) so I could get his hair clean with no water at all running down his face. It was a pain, but it worked. Fortunately he got over that stage.

I try to wash hair and bodies first thing in the tub, because they so often misbehave and have to be taken out (it's great fun to try to splash ALL the water onto the floor, isn't it?)

Well, I got the bucket at Wal-mart and was SOOO excited. I thought everything would be grand now. But my DD SCREAMED when I used it - even though not a drop of water went in her face. Aye carumba! Melodrama here.
I will try using it on my DS tomorrow (he is sick so slept through bath time and dinner tonight)
Wish me luck! thansk so much for all the great advice!

We have the bucket but my kids still won't look up and the water gets in their faces. We switched to using a handheld shower which is wonderful. We do it right away and I tell the kids "shower time" and they think it is so much fun. Once the "shower" is done they can spend the rest of the time playing.
