When we made the switch from bottles to Nuby soft spout sippies at 13 months, it went very easily. We've used the Nubys with no trouble since then until...

my little scientists discovered that if you turn the cup upside down and press on it, you can make big puddles of milk and juice. Now they use their cups like laser guns; zapping everything in sight (including Mommy, Daddy and the dog) with their cup spouts and squirting liquid everywhere.

So... I bought some hard spout cups (Nubys). No deal. They won't drink out of them at all.

Anyone have any advice? Are there hard spout cups that work particularly well? I'm getting tired of getting zapped and stepping in puddles!

    Thanks,

    Karen

God love them....I use the nuby soft spouts too and so far havent come to any problems with them.

The girls throw them around the house, leave them lying on the ground/table's and they dont seem to leave any mess.

they will be doing what your girls are doing soon, I can see it now! more mess for mummy.

maybe try a hard top sippy and see how they go, i wouldnt have any to advise you on because i've only ever used the nuby's.

We transitioned straight from bottles to Playtex Sparkler cups which have a hard spout. They did fine with them. After that we used Munchkin straw cups which have a soft rubbery straw. Maybe they would transition to those smoother.

We use the Gerber hard spouts for the same reason. They did the same thing as yours with Nuby soft spouts and to a lesser extent (it took more work but they will still do it) with straw cups. I just got rid of the soft spouts and straws one day and did it cold turkey. They will figure out that if they want to drink, it's this or nothing. I had always done milk in hard spouts though after the first milk soft spout puddle. I could deal with water puddles but not milk all over the carpet. Mine will still bang the hard spout cups to get liquid out, but it's just a few drops, not puddles. Good luck!

We also switched to hard spouts for similar reasons -- the Gerber soft spouts we had always had the vavles falling out, so the girls could make a huge mess! We just switched cold turkey and it was no big deal, but if I were you I would just switch cold turkey and not give them any other cups. Like Kelly said, they will figure out soon enough that if they want to drink, it's the hard spouts or nothing. There may be a couple of meals with them refusing the cups and making a fuss about it, but I bet they'll come around pretty quickly. Good luck!

I really like the First Years hard spout ones with the built in valve or the Playtex Insulator ones. Mine love anything with Dora, Thomas, Cars, etc. on it. Maybe you can tempt them with a favorite character?

I had milk everywhere puddles in the high chair the bouncer oh my god i found rotten milk in my linen closet

my boys were 15 months at the time
I took everyone around the garbage and in a soft voice I explained to everyone that it was time to move on to new cup and how excited we are how much we are growing yada yada yada yada

Then we introduced the new cup Nicholas did fine he just like to drink and getting all the cheers he was excited

My little Antoine however fought the fight cried didn't drink cried tantrum cried so when I was ready to give up I didn't he ended up very thirsty in 2 hours and took the cup

I held him and comforted him through the process.

My son used Nubys as well and I tried giving them to the girls. One of my girls (Bell) figured out almost immediately how to work that puddle producing wonder. I've gone thru and thrown all of the Nubys away and we're using the Playtex brand hard spouted sippys and some different straw cups.

    Best of luck!
