We have been slowly starting to potty train our boys. They have been showing signs of being ready for awhile now. They will both come up and tell us if they have to go "poo" sometimes in time, mostly after the fact. They have both actually made it in time several times much to our amazment. I do realize that this is still early on and they don't fully understand what is going on but my question is when they do tell us they have to go, how long should we leave them on the potty. This morning Keagan told me he had to go, so we sat there for a half hour and nothing. I think he would have been content to sit there all day. We read stories, play pattycake, sing songs, count and so on. Another question, if they do tell us after the fact do we still put them on the potty or wait until next time? Any advice on this or anything else you can think of would really help this first time mom out. :help: Thanks so much! Sorry if this is somewhere I couldn't find, I did look but I might not have searched in the right place.

I read this a couple days ago and have been struggling to come up with an appropriate response. Kyle takes longer to go than K does but I have never controlled how long he sits. He has always let me know when he is done and he does always go when he sits. I have never made a 'fun' thing out of the potty though so maybe making it more boring would help (maybe no stories, songs, games)?

If an opportunity is missed then I would just wait for the next one.

I agree that maybe it shouldn't be fun time. Let them read a book, but all the activity and singing may distract them from the actual task.

Keep trying but I do think they may be a bit young just yet. I would let them sit on the potty whenever they want to, without a diaper on so they get the idea, and when they actually do it make a really big deal about it but I wouldn't really push the issue with them until closer to two.

Thank you for your responses. I will try not making is so interesting or fun and see how that works. I am definitely in no rush to get them potty trained. I just thought with them showing interest that we would start attempting. I really have no clue as how to go about doing it so I thought I would try and get some advice. Thanks again!

Funny, I never actually sat mine on the potty. I didnt have to. I showed them the potty, and let them sit on it if they wanted to, then one day they did a pee pee, and we had a pee pee "party" and that was that, they've been going on it ever since. I'm certainly counting my blessings on this one. I wish everything went that easily with my boys !
