Gosh, what a day! Ugh! Anyway, DH is out of town and everything seems to happen when he is out of town (I think its some kind of murphys law in our house!). Anyway, the kids were going up the stairs when DD fell and smacked her chin, and there was blood everywhere, when I look closer I see that she has definitely bitten right through her bottom lip, as I can see the cut on the outside of her bottom lip. it has been about an hour, it is not bleeding anymore, I have tried to put ice on it (which probably totally lasted about 60 seconds, because she didn't like it). I gave her some tylenol and put her to bed (because its 7pm where I live). I am just worried, should have taken her to emerg? I am hoping it will be ok, because a trip here to the emerg could be hours and not even guaranteed to see an actual peadatrician.

Anyone else have this happen? do you think i need to wake her up and go to the doctor?

I don't think I'd wake her up, but I would schedule an appointment with the doctor for tomorrow morning. Cuts that show through to the outside may require stitches so you should have her checked out, but at least in my mind, it's not an emergency enough to go to the hospital in the middle of the night.

Hugs to you for dealing with this, especially with your husband being gone!

Oh, I'm sorry that happened. I don't think emergency is necessary, but I would get it looked at tomorrow. Not just because of the possibility of stitches, but because with that type of injury, I've had doctors put the kids on a round of antibiotics to prevent infection since they can get infected fairly easily around the mouth.

I agree with the pp. I'd schedule a same day appt with the pedi to get her checked out. My DD fell and split the inside of her upper lip. The pedi checked her teeth to make sure they were okay. She said cuts around the mouth bleed a lot, but heal pretty quickly. She said we could give ibuprofen to help with any discomfort. I hope she feels better soon.

Poor peanut! I did that as a child & have a beautiful scar to prove it! I'm sure she'll be fine. Ibuprofen will help more with swelling, in case she wakes in the night upset. On a side note, though...and don't quote me on this...I think stitches can only be done within a certain amount of time after the accident. Again, don't quote me, but I SWEAR my friend's little boy couldn't get them when he should have because it had been over 8 hours or something. You could maybe CALL your ER & ask, but if she's asleep...I'm not sure I'd wake her either. Like someone stated, the mouth heals pretty quickly. But, she may have a nice battle scar like me (I also didn't get stitches when I did it)!

I called and talked to the doctor to see what I should do, yesterday when Eli hit his head on the concrete.

    Good luck.

    btdt,

My dd did need stitches for it. Tomorrow is too late for stitches, it will be too far into healing by then and there is nothing for the doc to do tomorrow. Personally I would either go to the doc now or just forget it. The mouth heals quickly so if you don't think she needs stitches and her teeth look okay then I would just keep it clean and watch for infection. If it seems to be getting infected, then I would take her.

Oh no....I hope it heals quickly. It should. BUT...I agree w/ Alison. Tomorrow will probably be too late for stitches. Stitches need to happen with in 24 hours. I don't think I would wake her up either. If it were me, I would probably call our ped. in the morning to see if he recommended antibiotics since it is a mouth cut. Other than that, I would just keep it clean and dry (as dry as possible considering the location).
