Our house is very small and even if I do a family party, the smallest it could be (to make a long story short) would be about 30 people and I am lucky if my house could hold 10 people. Last year we did a big bash at a community center, which ended up being expensive anyway after getting the food and decorations and all and a lot of work for me, even though it worked out well. So now, I am trying to figure out how to do something low-key, for the family and a few kids (so it won't be a kiddie party only) and where to have it (that won't cost an arm and a leg). It really stinks that their birthday is in November, if it were a warmer month we could do it outside or even at a park. Any suggestions?

We skipped having a 2 yr old party for many of the reasons/issues you mentioned. I think smaller is better. simplify! bday parties get out of control these days.

We also skipped the #2 bday party and had family over only. The 1st bday party was not only overwhelming, expensive and exhausting I couldn't go through it again. I really loved the family only party and we did an italian theme for lady and the tramp. Maybe a pizza parlor like place? Not a chuckee chese, but like an old fashion parlor if they have them in your area?
    Good luck!

We just family for the 2nd birthday but my first son we had it at Chuck E Cheese. It was fun and less stressful.

We just had a small cookout for close family on the girls' second birthday. This year we are actually throwing them their first party with friends at the Imagination Station, which is a big indoor play area with slides and bouncy castles. We are like you, it is always cold so whatever we do has to be indoors.

I'm another one skipping the 2nd birthday party. We had a big party too for their first, but not this year. I want to take them out for the day. Next year we'll have a nice kids' party for them. By then, they can actually ask who THEY want to come rather than a re-run of their first birthday party of 95% adults.

Like a pp mentioned, kid's birthday parties are getting out of control.
