I have been trying to find a list of average NCIU time vs. the week our babies are born but so far I haven't been able to locate one. Does anybody know where I can find one?

Here is a link to a chart we have as a sticky, for NICU stays by gestation. That said Emilie was born at 25w3d and she was in for 66 days and Trevor was born at 26w6d and in for 56 days, they came home the same day. It really just depends on each baby. I got the steroid shots and I truly believe that helped them and cut their NICU time down.

My boys were born at 33 wks 1d and spent a month in. Slvrhearts boys were born 33wks 6days and I think they were only there for a few days (less than a week). I learned in the NICU from the nurses that your race and the sex of the babies effects the length of their stay in most cases. Caucasian boys are there the longest as grower/feeders. They just don't gain weight as quickly.

Yep we heard this too. They said black girls do best, then white girls, then black boys and then white boys. They call them wimpy white boys in the NICU.

ETA: Wimpy white boys, was not the case with Trevor. When he was 3 lbs. he was the strongest baby in the NICU and there were full term babies in there at that time. He didn't have any complications at all during his NICU stay. Both my twins came home when I would have been 35 weeks pregnant. But they usually say to expect them home around their due date.

My babies were born at 32 weeks 2 days and spent 17 days.

Our NICU nurses called them Wimpy White Boys as well :). Although, that was not the case with my twins. Owen caught on to eating much faster and better than Molly. Owen stayed a couple extra days just so they could come home at the same time.

It seemed to me that most babies are sent home around 35/36 weeks gestational. This is not always the case. The NICU nurses will tell you to expect to bring them home around your due date. My due date was March 20th and they came home February 12th.

    Every baby is different.

I've read the research comparing caucasian and african american babies but am wondering if there is any data on other ethnic groups? Anyone know?

I'm sorry I don't know anything about that.

From my own experience each baby is different and develops/grows when they're ready. One thing I learned from the NICU was patience. John came home in 3 weeks--it took Chrisopher 5 1/2. It was the longest 51/2 weeks of our lives. I never realized waht preemie families went through before my experience!

I know that caucasian boys develop slowest and African girls the quickest in utero. My OB called it white boy syndrome. If a white boy is born the exact same gestation as a black girl, the girl is almost always a little more fully developed.

My peri just told me that for everyday the babies stay in your womb it is equal to 3 days in the NICU - so If I keep my babies in 5 days longer than it wouldmean 15 days in the NICU......

I thought that was interesting info....just passing it along - I know that was not really the question.

Mine were born at 36 weeks and one was in NICU for 9 days and one for 14 days. I think it just depends.....just take it easy and try to keep them in there as long as possible...I know it's hard, believe me!

My "wimpy white boys" were born at 35w4d with no NICU time at all. They were both 5lbs7oz. The only complication was that John needed a bit of oxygen at first, but we all came home together!

My girls were born at 26 weeks gestation. The chart linked above shows the average time is 85 days. Emily was in for 79 days and Audrey was 145 days.

I was induced at 36 weeks 2 days (after amnio showed mature lungs) due to ttts and still brought both babies home. Thank god. Those statistics are interesting. The only thing I ever heard was twins lungs develop earlier than singletons and girls develop sooner than boys but of course every case is different.

My boys were born at 31w 5d and were both in the hospital for 22days 3 days in NICU the rest in SCN which I think is pretty good. I had never heard of the whole boy/girl black/white thing but I will say that when were were in the SCN most of the babies were boys.

Our babies were born at 34 weeks and 3 days due to a concern of Hellp syndrome for me. Our boy, was smaller than his sister weighing a hefty 3lbs.12 oz. Austin was ready to come home first at 6 days but at the last minute released his sister too. So much for wimpy white boys. Austin is now over 5 pounds in less than two weeks!

My girls were born at 33w 3d and spent 10 days in NICU as growers and feeders. They were 5lb 4oz and 5lb 2oz (which is the 97th percentile for this birth age). So, I believe it totally depends on your pregnancy and babies. I'm sure there's some truth to the "average" NICU time, but it's certainly not something to count on.

I never heard the "wimpy boys" thing, that is funny!
My boys were born at 30 weeks and were in for 49 and 63 days. It all depends on the baby's progress.

Mine were born at 33 weeks exactly. They had steriod shots prior to the birth and my DS sayed in for 16 days and my DD was there for 17 both as feeders and growers.

We also had a nurse tell us about the whimpy white boy thing, but DS came home before DD. She started eating before him and got into an open air bed before him, but he passed her up and came home a day early.

Mine were born one day shy of 29 weeks (by my calculations, they said they were more like 28w3d but whatever!) Kenna spent 63 days and Mitchell 87 days. My nicu doesn't seem to rush anything at all and they don't like to send them home before their due date. I didn't see many at all go home before thier due date. It's a HUGE nicu and babies are flown in from everywhere to go there, so its a great one but they just take their time with everything.

I was told Mitchell was a wimpy white boy too. I was told it went black girls, white girls, asian girls, black boys, white boys, asian boys. Don't know if thats true but just what I was told. I believe hispanic was in between white and asian or somewhere around there...

We didn't have the steroid shots even though I begged for them earlier (they didn't believe me apparently that I was having contrax).

I think it is more on gestation, but I guess weight could make a difference. My two were very early, but had the steroid shots so they never had any lung issues, even born 3 months early. However there were full term babies in the NICU when we were there weighting 7 and 8 lbs. and they did have breathing problems. I think one of the big thing is lung maturity and breathing.

Boys were born 35w6d, both weighed about 5.5 lbs, and spent a week in the NICU due to breathing. (they spent the first 2-3 days on CPAP.) I suspect had we had the lung steroid shot, we would've been fine, but we didn't... :( and yes, I've heard from several NICU nurses of the wimpy white boy syndrome. Looks like it held true for us!

The chart was right on for us. My wimpy white boys were born at 33 weeks and were in the NICU for 14 and 17 days as growers and feeders. The one born first but smaller was ahead of his bigger brother all the way through and came home first.

Oh Oh, mine will be a mix between White and Asian. I guess that would make them the wimpiest of all :(

Mine were delivered at 33.4 weeks and DD spent 14 days, DS only 12 days. DS just had to gain some weight and keep his blood sugars high enough. DD had breathing problems.

My were born at 34 weeks and spent exactly a month in the NICU for Ben and a month and day in the NICU from Emmy from the time they were born.
Granted, DS1 was sick and I was sick so we weren't too much in a hurry to get them home to a sick house.

Mine were born at 34 weeks 5 days and were discharged at noon on the 12th day from the NICU...the 12th day was mostly waiting for rounding and getting the final approval to go. BTW My DD did way better that my DS, they kept her there bc they knew these were my first babies and i didn't want to go home with one and not the other.
I was also told white boys tend to be slower too...in my case it was true!
