Naptime Question...

My guys have been on a one nap schedule since August. They are 18 months now. They started with a 10:30 am til about 12:30. They ate when they woke up. We had this schedule because John needs to be picked up at 2:15 and we needed to have everyone awake and fed by 1:30.

I have noticed that in the past two weeks, they have been going down at 11am and still are not going to sleep... mostly talking a lot and then only sleeping 1 hour.

So my question is-- should I move their nap to 12:30 after they eat lunch at 11:45? Do you think they will be more tired and sleep a bit longer, til about 2:30? I can put John in extended day and pick him up at 3:30.

    Sarah,
I don't think it would hurt to try. Do they get really tired again in the day since they aren't sleeping long in the morning?

Sarah, they might just not be tired enough anymore. My guys go down between 12-1 (depending on how early they wake up). They almost always sleep until 3pm (sometimes Gabe will actually go to 4). So you might want to try it and see if they do any better by going down later. I think it's more of a natural tendency to be sleepy after lunch.

Yes, it seems by 4:30 they are pretty cranky. When they wake after only an hour, if I ignore them, they will go back to sleep for another 45 minutes sometimes.

Maybe I need to push it back and see if they will sleep til I get home from work.

I would push it back - or at least give it a try. Mine go down after lunch at about 11:30, and are down until about 2 - 2:30. They are really tired by lunchtime, but can make it through. Granted, we've only been on this schedule for about 2 - 3 weeks, but it seems to be working ok out. Since your guys are playing for a while, I'm voting with the they aren't tired enough by 10:30.

I eventually moved my single to after lunch too. It seemed like the natural evolution of things for me.

If you can put John in extended, that would probably work out well and he would have long time for fun and be more tired at night himself. Then you have a little more time with the kidlets. :hug99:

I think it is perfectly natural for the nap to move later and later as they get older.

We do an earlier lunch (11am) and nap from 12-2:30/3ish. I imagine that (if they ever sleep later than 6am  ) our nap will migrate to 1-3 as they get older.

Do you have to commit to extended day all or nothing, or can you try it and back out if it's a bust? Is there someone who can pick up your oldest for you a couple times while you experiment?

I think you have a good plan.

Just wanted to agree with the pp! I would push the nap to after lunch. They will be more tired PLUS they'll have had lunch, so they'll be full. Good luck Sarah!!

This is what we do. My two eat lunch at 11:30 and go down at 12:15.

    K. I think I will start that and put John in extended day for a little time and see how it goes.

Di, I don't get any extra time with them though, because I am at work. :(
