for the past month i put my LO's down the first sign they show that they're tired. (usually the eye rub). i hold them for about a minute or two with their pacis and loveys in their arms and they do the general eye roll in the back of their heads and i put them down. i would say they are about 85-90% asleep, lol.
once down, one LO falls asleep fairly quickly. he takes a few head rubs, about 5 mins to roll to his side and sleep.
the other LO takes constant head-rubbing, turning to his side, etc. i leave him in his crib; i hear him whining but don't go in...i do the every 3-5 minute walk-in; re-insert paci, turn him to his side, hand him his lovey, rub head, etc.

when will he just learn to fall asleep on his own?
    am i doing everything right?

ETA - the same LO wakes up prematurely and is still tired but i try not to pick him up and do the whole rock thing. im afraid he'll become dependent on it.
OK - also adding (LOL) it took that LO an additional 20 minutes to fall asleep.

Sorry to hear naps are going so badly. We are creating our own little monsters because we (including my mom, who watches them during the day) tend to rock them to sleep and/or give them a bottle just before nap time. At least they go to sleep fairly easily...but they are now dependent on that routine. I just started reading HSHHC earlier this week...I'm hoping I can use the author's techniques to get our boys to nap easier without so much effort on our part.

It sounds like you are doing everything right, sometimes they just have a hard time falling asleep.

Yeah if you figure the nap thing out, let me know!!! I've given up for now and am letting them nap during the day in swings - otherwise they don't sleep and get WAY overtired and I pull my hair out. I figure I'll push crib naps once they get a little older.

It wasnt closer to 7 months for me that I could just lay them in their cribs and walk out and know they would go to sleep.

ok so i'm almost there! :-D PHEW!
they both just went down again. the LO that didn't sleep a wink this morning fought it (overtired i am sure) but once i got him in the right position he passed right out. hopefully they both get great naps now.
