My girls have decided they want to be up all the time now and hardly sleep at all during the day. They scream their heads off when I put them down for a nap. They go to sleep after their 11 oclock night feeding and then get up around 4 am and then back down till 7:30 am. After that they are basically up the rest of the day.

How much did your twins sleep when they their age?

    Thanks!

My boys have gone through stages. They started sleeping great at night just waking up once ot twice and then going right back to sleep after their feeding (usually but not always). As for naps they usually take 3 naps and sleep anywhere from 1/2hour to 2 /12hrs. each time. The average is about and hour nap though.

I was also told that babies go through a growth spirt at 6weeks so maybe that could be why they aren't napping well right now? They may starting napping better in a few days or so. My boys weren't napping very well and I realized they were needing to eat more. Once I figured that out they started sleeping lots better. That went on for about a week and now they are eating about the same amount they were before and still sleeping well.

At that age, our naps were all over the place, and not long at all. Around 5-6 months, napping got better and they started sleeping through.

Oh wow... at that age mine slept a lot during the day...

Could yours be overtired, and that is why they fuss when you try putting them down for a nap?

Mine are doing the exact same thing - almost to the letter. They are 6 weeks old. Any yes, to the previous post, mine are overtired but how in the world am I to make them go to sleep when they just cry every time I set them down. I am certainly not doing anything to keep them up, that I know of anyway. Today I could tell they were getting sleepy so I put DS down and he keep waking up and crying and this went on for about an hour and a half. He was definilty overtire but....

How do you MAKE a baby who NEEDS to sleep fall to sleep? I tried everything I new of from bouncy to swing to sound machine to bouncy ball.

We go through the same thing in the evening when they are both way overtired as they will not go back down after they wake up from their afternoon nap (around 3pm) and are up screaming until 9:30 because they are sooo tired. How do you soothe/rock/etc... both of them to sleep when there is one of you?

This is such a tough question. My girls get overtired when we go out because they love to stay up and look at everything around them. After much trial and error I found out that one of my girls love the swing, but will fall asleep in it ONLY if she has her paci too (and the mobile with the bears that hangs above her has to be out of her eyesight because she will keep herself up to watch the bears go round and round). My other girl won't take a paci, but likes to suck and will calm down if I let her suck on my pinkie finger knuckle while shushing in her ear. After I get her calm and almost asleep I can put her down in the boppy or swing and she'll nap. This is a lot of work and thankfully I don't have to do this everytime to get them to sleep.. just when they are really overtired and twitchy (do your babies do that too when they are tired?).

I wish there was some magic bullet answer, but I haven't found it yet. My girls are 4 months and are just starting to have more defined naps (as opposed to the cat naps they were taking from about 4 weeks until 3 months). Now the daycare is attempting to get them to nap in cribs.. this is something I haven't been able to do yet. Good luck!!! -Leighann

Wow, your kiddos are the exact opposite of mine. My babies go down at 7pm for the night and sleep for 2 - 2.5 hours intervals and then wake up and feed. Feeding takes about 45 mins and then they go back down without fussing. They get up for the day around 10am and are usually awake for a couple hours (although one of them usually falls asleep during that time). They go down for a nap around noon or 1 and then get up around 3. As much as I try to keep them awake, they usually fall back asleep and only wake up for feedings. I've been concerned that they sleep too much during the day and that they won't sleep for me at night, but that has yet to happen. Apparently they are just tired babies.

My babies sleep best when swaddled with the SwaddleMe blankets by Kiddopotamus. They also like the white noise machine and a dark room. You could try these things but I usually only use them when I want them to sleep (at night or during nap times).

    Good luck!

That is tough. I used to sit on the sofa with one baby at either side of me (swaddled). I'd pick one up and lay him between my knees, so his head was at my knees and his feet were touching my tummy. I'd swing my legs back and forth like windshield wipers. I'd pick up the other baby in my arms and bounce/rock him while patting his bum (my boys always like bum patting, not sure why). I used to "sush" at max volume. Once they were calm I would attempt to transfer them to their swings, one at a time, but sometimes I could only get one into the swing.

If this failed, I'd turn up the music quite loud and dance around with one while the other was in the bouncy chair (sometimes crying his eyes out but what could I do?). Usually James would fall asleep within 2 songs if he had his paci in. Evan usually needed 3 or 4 songs and never took a paci.

It's hard, I know. Believe me, it gets a little easier every month. My guys are 4.5 months and most days are very good ones (I used to measure life in hours when they were newborns - "That wasn't such a bad hour." now I feel confident enough to measure life in days, so that's a good sign!!).
