nap potty training

I need to get DS 1 (he turns 3 this month) nap potty trained ASAP because they won't let him move up to the next room in daycare until then. He's getting really bored in his current room with all the younger kids. He is potty trained during the day and hardly ever has accidents. However, for naps, he always wakes up either wet or poopy. I've tried just letting him sleep just in underwear and he still pees the bed. Any suggestions?

Like night training, I don't think this is something kids have control over. After Amy was day trained (just before age 3), she started staying dry at naps within a couple of weeks. But Sarah has been day trained for about 3 months now (since just after age 3), and still wets her diaper during naps quite often.

Our daycare fortunately has no rules about PT (there are some 3-year-olds in A&S's class who are still in diapers all the time) -- they just said that they want to keep a child in diapers for nap until she's been dry for about a week straight.

It seems like a silly rule to me -- how hard can it be to put a pull-up on before nap and take it off after? That seems a lot easier than trying to keep a child entertained and engaged in a room full of younger kids. But I guess there's probably nothing you can do about that.

I agree with the PPer. Children cannot control their bodies while they are asleep! I would talk to the director about this rule. If the only PTing issue with your son is naptime, they should be able to deal with a diaper at that time.

I also agree that kids can't contol it while they are sleeping. Ask you peditricain for information on what is developmenally appropriate for three year olds at nap time. Share this info. with your daycare director. It doesn't seem fair to hold him back and keep him with the babies.

I know you are talking naps, but I remember out ped. said that it isn't uncommon for kids to not totally night trained until 4.5 (or older). I w.onder if this applies to all sleep times.

Thanks. I was thinking along these same lines too. I'm also not sure of what I think of the daycare's recommendation to just have him nap in underwear everyday. He's been waking up in wet undies and needing to get all the blankets washed daily for the last week.

I can't believe they would rather be washing bedding and changing his clothes every day than just putting a diaper/pull up on for the nap, that's crazy. :umm:
Maybe if you explain that he would likely have an accident every day they will change their minds.

Oh they just change his clothes. And then I take his dirty clothes and bedding home to wash.

I used to put mine in a pull up at nap time! I wish they could accommodate that! :(

Their policy seems unreasonable to me. I'd question whether the embarrassment of waking in a puddle every day and being told he has to stay with the babies because he can't control his bladder in his sleep will lead to other problems. I know it's a hassle, but is it possible to shop for another care center?

Right. <_< I still think that's more work than the diaper though.
I have to agree with everyone that it's a terrible policy. If they are not willing to work something out with you (maybe he could be in the older room and just go to the younger room for nap time) then I think, like debid, that you should look for alternative care.

Sounds unreasonable to me too. It isn't something they can control when they are sleeping. My boys are fully PT'd and have been but they have accidents and most when they happen are when they are sleeping.
