They woke up from their afternoon nap before 2, usually it is until at least 2:30 or 3. They have colds(so do I) so this could have something to do with it. Anyway, it does not look like they will eb going back to sleep. I have tried the late in the day catnap thing before and it never works. I know they will not make it until 6 (the earliest I would normally put them down) and even 5:30 would be pushing it. What should I do as far as nap/bedtime for today???

PS they have been having nap troubles alot when they would wake up at 4 or 4:30 and i put them down at 7 or 7:30, they were not happy, that was way too late. I feel like the rest of the day is doomed!!

I'm sorry your little ones have colds. Do you go get them right when they wake up or do you leave them up there for a bit? I personally would try and put them down for another nap around 4or so for about 30 min. or so, if they fall asleep or even just let them rest in their crib. If you don't want to do that than an earlier bedtime would be the only other thing to do. I would think they should be able to make it until 5:30 and then put them to bed if you like. If you don't want to put them down for another nap today then I would try and keep them occupied and entertained. Good luck to you, I know how those days go when nap times ends early. :hug99:

No I leave them there, they are still there, I will go get them in a few minutes. I figure they are not crying so they are fine.

I am more worried about dd. She will be tired during dinner and then when I go to put them down even if it is 5:30 (she can't go much more than 3 hours and she woke up closer to 1:45) she gets overtired and then takes hours to settle down. It is gonna be one of those days, isn't it??

That is what I do too. I have one awake right now upstairs talking away and one still sound asleep.

Well I'm not sure what to tell you since you don't think your DD will make it. You could always try a small catnap for her. Good luck! I will keep my fingers crossed that it all works out for you.

BTW, we are having one of those days here today too, but nap time went fine, it's just everything else.

I would go by your DD's cues. If she starts getting fussier earlier, do dinner and maybe a bath to soothe her and put her to bed a little early. Or you could try a third cat-nap around 4. My girls are still doing three naps/day. they usually sleep from 12:30 or 1 until 2ish and then from 4-5 and go to bed by 7 or 7:30.

Since today is cold and rainy we are having one of those days... the girls didn't nap well for DH this morning and then they both woke up from long mid-afternoon naps still sleepy, but awake. Right now they are rolling on the floor together cooing and rubbing their eyes, so I think they may fall asleep earlier than 4pm. GL! -Leighann

Justin and Ellie have really had a time of it lately haven't they? Poor kiddos ... and poor mama! Maybe they're going through growth spurts lately that have caused their schedules to be off kilter? I think with them being sick, you should maybe just let them rest as they need to and go to bed whenever they need/want to. As frustrating as it is, just go with the flow and follow their lead, even if they have different needs right now. I always found that illnesses, even sniffles, got our schedules completely out of whack. Babies feel crummy like just we adults do when they're sick, so grab a nap whenever you can and let them do the same.

I don't mean to sound like a know-it-all, it's sure easy to dispense advice when I'm not the one dealing with two sad, sleepy, sniffly babies. Just wanted to send some encouragement, as I know you've been dealing with crazy sleep issues of late. Hope all is well very soon and they can get back into somewhat of a routine again. Blessings to all of you! (By the way, your little ones are so darned cute!)

Not a problem Kathy and you are not sounding like a know it all at all. Just one thing, how do I work dinner if they want to go to bed for the night at 5pm??

Can you feed them at 4:30?

Do you mean dinner for them or you?

Not for me, I eat when they go to sleep anyway, for them. I can do 4:30 but it takes longer than 30 minutes to do that and change diapers and into pjs and all. It sounds rediculious but should I do dinner at 4pm???

Ok, stated their dinner at 4:!5 (crazy!!!) and put them down at 5:15. I think I might have missed the window with dd. She was quite fussy and tired during dinner and now she is wide awake and "walking" around in her crib. Ds is pretty much settled down. Hopefully she will settle down too. If they both sleep through the night, I can handle the early wake up. They are usually up at 5:30-6 no matter how late I put them to bed anyway. Thanks for the advice ladies. Have a great night.

When my babies have a crappy afternoon nap I take them for a walk in the stroller about 2 hours after their nap ended. I recline their seats and give them their soothers - they always fall asleep for 20 minutes or so - just long enough that they're not too crabby in the evening. I don't make bedtime any later - a 20 minute nap isn't restorative, just anti-grump. If I can't do this because of the weather or something, I put them to bed earlier.

Ahh if I need to because of today, I'll try that tomorrow. Today I would not have been able to anyway, it was raining here. I sure hope is it nice out tomorrow.

Like a pp said, sometimes I have to throw in a 3rd mini nap too. And for the same reasons you mentioned....things just got messed up. It usually happens if after I put them down for a nap and a little while later someone rings the doorbell and the dog goes crazy, that's it! Nap is ruined.

I had this problem yesterday and I tried my d*mndest to keep them awake until their normal sleep time. Didn't happen....but they didn't get up too early this morning.

I hope you have much luck tonight with them!

We were up from our afternoon nap at 2:30 today too. I just fed them dinner at 4:45 and then had them in bed by 6:15. I may have stretched it too long since one was already up crying. But he went back to sleep. So hopefully they will all sleep through tonight?! :good:

Thanks ladies. Well dd was up a few times during the night but I don't think for all that long. And I think ds may have been up at one point or another but not for long at all. It was definitely not like previous nights when they have been up for hours. Probably like 10-15 minutes was the longest at any given point. I feel really guilty but I took Nyquil, so it is all kind of fuzzy. I needed some relief, I have a cold/sinus infection and felt so horrible last night. So I guess it did really go better than I expected. And this morning, ds slept until 6 and dd until like 6:20 and I think it was only because he woke her up which was fine with me because I didn't want to have to do it and I don't like one sleeping more than 20-30 minutes more than the other, well you all know the rest so I don't have to say. So that was all good, except it took them an hour to go down for their nap this morning. They are finally sleeping though. I hope the rest of the day goes smoothly and they can go down at their regular time tonight.

    Rachel, how was your night?

Ours was a bit rocky to start but they worked it out. They both woke by 10 pm but I let them work it out instead of going in because I knew they just needed to go back to sleep and they did. But they got up at 6am. Glad to hear that they made it through the night for you :a_smil09:
