My twins developed oral thrush about two weeks ago. Our pedi prescribed Nystatin for them. I've noticed though that they are reacting negatively towards it. They are both displaying signs of colic now. Their tummies are rumbling with wind & Michael tightens his body & grunts every now & again. We have decided to lay off the medicine for the weekend to see if they improve.

I will be calling the pedi on Monday again to ask her for something else if my suspicions are proven right.

We have been sterilizing their bottles since day one.
I feel that the thrush could be from all the antibiotics I was given before they were born.

For those of you who's twins have had it, what did you use that worked?

    Thanks for any adivice..

Nystatin worked for us. Thrush was MISERABLE for Emma. She had a 1 1/2 doses of Nystatin before it cleared up. With Lauren, it was cleared up withn a couple of days.

Nystatin is really good... it should clear up in no time.

For the belly aches, I would give gas drops in their bottles, that should help. The little tummy's brand works just as well as Mylicon.

My twins were severly reactive to Enfamil Enfacare, then we switched to Similac lactose free. They were like different babies, slept peacefully, no grunting or straining. But after they both got thrush & we got the medicine it started again.
Now their little tummies are full of wind. I'm 99% sure they have or are developing colic. Don't know if it's as a result of the medicine or the formula or both. We have opted to cut out the medicine for today & see if their symptoms clear up. If not, they may have to go on to the soy based formula.

I just keep thinking that this to will pass. Just terrible seeing them in distress & not knowing what to do.

My first son had colic and it started when he was a month and it lasted about a month. Everyone had advise for me on what to do from gas drops to scalded milk to wrapping him in warm blankets. Nothing worked for us. It just had to pass. One thing that would calm him down was for me to take a shower with him. We took a couple of showers a day! Finally it just went away as quickly as it came.

My twins had thrush. The doctor just told me to sterilize everything she uses and not to share with her brother. He gave us the nystatin also but he said don't worry if they don't take it. The only way for it to work is to keep it in their mouth as long a possible....like mouth wash.(like that was going to happen). So we just let it run it's course and in a week or two it was gone.

    Hope they feel better soon.

The ONLY thing that worked for us was GENTIAN VIOLET! I would put it on my finger and coat their entire mouth (gums - tongue etc) once a day for 3-4 days. Other than cleaning everything, this was what helped us. You can find it at pharmacies. I would call around to see who has it. The nystatin didn't help us and only gave them sore bums from the diarhea.

We used 1/4 teaspoon of powder acidopholis in their milk bottles and got them to eat yogurt at meal times. It was always gone within 5 days. I asked my pedi about it, and he said fine. We bought it at out local health food store. Store it in the fridge.

My boys had thrush, too ... we did 2 rounds of nystatin, and I started taking acidipholis supplements and eating a lot of yogurt, before it went away. I would make a game of putting the Nystatin on with Q-tips, they got really good about taking it. Mine didn't get gassy, though. Are you nursing? If you are, make sure that YOU aren't infected as well ... if it's in your breasts, you just keep passing it back and forth between you and your babies. You have to always wash after nursing, air dry, and in some cases need to go on Diflucan yourself to get rid of the thrush in you.

All of my kids had thrush. They were all perscribed a liquid medicine called Fluconazole which is the generic of Diflucan. Cody's disappeared after the first day of treatment. It has to be taken for 7 days though. His was also really bad because he got it while his Dr was on vacation. By the time we got the meds his entire tongue was covered & some on the roof of his mouth.
