    Hello all,

DH and I are extremely happy and proud to announce the safe arrival of our fraternal twin sons, Joseph and Zachary. [IMG] They are currently 19 days old! They were born by C-section on 12/22 at 15:54 and are 29 seconds apart! The C-section went really well and we left the hospital after a 4-day stay in the hospital. My older son Joseph needed some oxygen for about 20 mins and my younger son did not need anything.
They are both so lovely and wonderful. [IMG] DH and I feel really blessed to have them. This site has been wonderful for so many different reasons and I finally wanted to share the good news of my sons being here. Life has been so different with them here and now it is so hard finding time to other things that I use to do so easily before like getting on the internet hence the delay in getting my announcement out here!

Recovering from the C-section has been hard. I have never had major surgery before and have never experienced such pain before (the after effects of the stitches and not being able to walk that much). The painkillers have been so great in helping me to recover. 19 days on and now I am a lot better and more or less off the painkillers. I am a lot more mobile and move around a lot more now and would say that I am probably about 80% back to normal.

My little ones have been wonderful! But I did have a big scare a couple of days ago where my first born was spitting up and seemed to be choking and had the choking episode a couple of times. That really freaked me out and scared DH and me. DH was the one that heard him in the night time and went to the rescue. Has this happened to any other ladies? The Pediatrician said this was quite common and to make sure my babies burp after their milk and that they are kept upright for at least 20 to 30 mins after feeding.

I am currently breastfeeding both and so far it is going well except for my left nipple that feels quite sore a lot of the time. Moderators: where can I get advice on breastfeeding within the twin forum? I will be going to my local breastfeeding club to get some advice soon. I have been using some cold packs that have helped some but it still hurts. My Ob has ruled out mastitis as my breast is not red and I don’t have any of the other symptoms.

For other mums to be, I just wanted you to know that I hardly used anything from my hospital bag except toiletries, mobile phone, camera and video camera. All the time I spent packing my PJ’s, towel, etc was wasted as I did not use or have a need to use that stuff.

Anyway, all in all, I feel so happy and blessed to have my two sons in my life now. [IMG] [IMG]I hope and pray all the other mums to be have a good birth experience like I have had. Amen!!!

Congrats and happy birthday! Sounds like an awful scare - and you weathered it just fine. Good luck w/the breastfeeding; there's a BF forum that you can click to on the home page.

Congratulations and [IMG], Joseph and Zachary!!! I'm glad to read that everything went smoothly for you!

I had a challenging time breastfeeding my son in the beginning, too. If you've ruled out latch problems, mastitis, and other things, it could be something as simple as your nipple is sensitive on that side and needs some time to toughen up, given the demands on it. This was the case for me. It was very painful for a while but over time the pain subsided and all was fine. Hang in there!

Congratulations!! I'm glad you're recovering, and that BF is going well. I've already checked out the Breastfeeding forum (I'm sure the mods will link this to their forum anyways) and it is great! I'm sure they'll help you through any problems. if nipple soreness is all you've got, I'd say you're doing great. when I BF my ds, I was in so much pain I would cry when he would latch on....turns out I had horrible mastitis that wouldn't go away. Just make sure you're only sore, and don't have red spots, heat in a particular part of your breast or any temp. Otherwise, it sounds like you're right on track! Good job mama!

Congratulations!! Do you have any pictures to share? [IMG] It sounds like you're doing a great job and I hope you can get the help and advice you need. Have you tried using lanolin for your sore nipple? I used that in the beginning with DD and it seemed to help. You can get something called "PureLan" at Wal-Mart, Target, etc. Sometimes a sore nipple can be a sign of an incorrect latch, but most beginners have some soreness, I'd say.

Thanks for all the best wishes and tips ladies. I think I have a left sore nipple. The pain comes and goes and yes, I have been using lanolin everytime after I feed. My two sons are so different with their feeding styles. My younger baby is now affectionately called the 'milk activator' because he more or less latched on very well within a couple of hours of being born. He always latches immediately like a magnet and has a very strong suck reflex. At the beginning of his feeds, it can be very painful and I am hoping that pain will subside once my nipples toughen up. Now my first born, his style is completely different and we call him the 'milk receiver' because his brother activates the milk to come in and he receives it!!! But he unlike his brother does not latch on immediately. He likes to have a conversation with me first and likes to get aquainted with the nipple first. It can take up to 10 mins for him to get a proper latch on. My sons are just different but it is interesting how their different personalities have been revealed so quickly already considering they are only 20 days old now. They are both so lovely and gorgeous. I have to organise the pics and will then get some out.

And I think I will be checking out the BF forum very soon.....

Congratulations, I am glad to hear everyone is doing well. Especially glad to hear you are feeling better!

I linked this thread to our Breastfeeding forum but for future reference you can find it here. You will find a wealth of nursing information, support and friendship.

I used next to nothing in my bag either but I guess it can't hurt to be prepared.

Thanks Dianne. Now with twins, should I feed on both breasts with both sons or feed one breast per son? I was doing one breast per son, but then had a chat with one of our pediatricians and he said to feed both sons on both breasts for 10 mins at a time. I then switched to that but then found that the one that was fed last was not satisfied and was still hungry. SO now I am back to feeding one son per breast. This seems to work for me. Is this right?

Also, I have started using a breast pump once in the evening and have only been able to express 1 or 2 oz's. Is this normal or should I be able to express more?

And one last question: have I started to pump too early? A friend of mine and my OB said that I should start after about 6 weeks. BTW, I am avoiding pumping on my left due to the soreness. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated..

You can click on the link in my title to get to the breastfeeding forum, but to answer your questions:
Lanelin is great for sore nipples. There is generally a little bit in the beginning when the babies are learning to latch that you get a bit sore. You can use lanelin after every nursing session.
One baby per breast per feeding. I would switch them around only at every other nursing session or once a day. I started pumping immediately because I wanted to be sure I was producing enough (supply & demand system) and I wanted some stash. If it is too much for you, and you are not getting enough sleep, then by all means, don't pump.
Congratulations on your babies!! I hope you recover from the c-section soon!

Congratulations on your two little gifts! I also had a difficult time recovering from my c-section. It has been 12 weeks now and I'm still not 100%. It takes time.

Great job on the bfing!!! I know it's challenging but so worth it, I just love it! I also had soreness (and continue to experience it periodically)and used lanolin. It seems to decrease the pain. With regards to pumping, I pumped at night for our ds as he didn't nurse as effectively as his sister. I didn't pump many oz at a time- I attributed that to my breasts not being very "pumpable". I tried not to worry too much about it. If they are gaining weight and having enough wet and dirty diapers, I would imagine you are producing enough, even though you pump 1-2 oz. Again, congratulations on your little ones!!

Thank you all for the congrats and support. It's funny how the soreness seems to come and go. I will be checking out the BF forum to find out about what I can do to releive the soreness (hot or cold packs?). I am using the lanolin that really helps and DH feeds our sons formula in the early morning hours. I think we will start feeding them formula once a day too. It seems like this is a common thing to do with twins.

And I look forward to getting to know all you lovely BF mummies as I'm sure there is a lot for me to learn!

    Congratulations on two healthy babies!!!

First, let me tell you how much I can relate to the choking, spit up thing. When we first arrived home (2 days after being born), we walked in the house and set the car seat down. At that minute, Nick started choking and turning blue. I was struggling to get him out of the car seat, but did, and he was fine (I also was scrambling to find which bag I packed the sucker outer in). Turned out he has terrible reflux, which is improving all the time now (they're 5 months old). But, those scary moments! He also ended up on a sleep monitor for a month because the ped. saw this happen (the turning blue part was a whole different issue, though. His body thought he was still breathing amniotic fluid instead of oxygen, so the oxygen wasn't traveling like it should. He outgrew that in 2 days.)

Also, for your sore nipple, someone once told me to put tea bags on them when you're in the bath. It did seem to help some, along with the lanolin. With my oldest dd, I was cracked and bleeding a bit. It's a bit scary when the child spits up blood, but then you realize it's just from you, and the panic goes away.

Good luck and enjoy those babies!

Holy Moly! your experience sounds a lot worse than mine. I am so pleased that all is well now. At the time when my little one was spitting up, it got really scary and I became borderline panicy because my other son started crying too. Gotta try and keep a cool head and I'm so grateful my DH was close by to help too.

Thanks for the advice with the tea bags. I'll try that to see if it helps!

Congratulations! [IMG] I'm glad you all are adjusting well and that they boys took to breastfeeding. I also recovered slowly from my c-section so I understand about only being back to about 80% of normal at this time. Surgery just didn't seem to agree with me. [IMG] I can't wait to see pictures of the little ones and I hope the breastfeeding becomes a little less painful soon. Congrats again!

Congratulations on the birth of your sons! One thing that has helped me is Newman's Ointment. It is a cream you can get from your doctor to put on your nipples. For me it worked like magic, a lot better then lanolin. Congrats again and best wishes!

Thanks again for all the congrats! [IMG] I went to the Pediatrician for another baby checkup and the Dr there said I might have a thrush infection on my left breast and prescribed Nystatin drops tp put on my breasts after feeding and also advised me to get breast shells as the pain I was experiencing was probably due to soreness and friction from my bra pads. I have the shells now and boy, has it made a big difference! [IMG] My breasts are better now and it doesn't hurt as much to BF.

And how do I post pictures of my little ones? Can someone please let me know? Thanks!
