My MIL offered to breastfeed my children

OK, I'm not even sure where to start with this, but thought it might be good for a chuckle. My SIL (we married two brothers, so we both married into the family) just had her first baby last week at 35w5d, a singleton boy. He's doing great and is precious and perfect (ok, I might be biased) but is having trouble latching on just yet. He's sucking and doing well with the pinky/syringe method, so it's just a matter of time. Anyhow, breastfeeding has been a big topic in our family for the last few weeks. I am still not sure if I will be able to due to a breast reduction surgery I went through years ago and we don't know how my mammary glands will produce in relation to their new location. So far, I have no signs of change in my boobs.

All of this to say, last week my MIL was up here with my BIL and SIL after their birth of their son and came to my room to hang out while SIL was pumping (we were two doors down from each other). During the conversation, she tells me that her doctor told her she had the best breastmilk he had ever seen and wished he could pattent it (um, first off...how do you "look" at breastmilk and know it's the best?). She then offered to breastfeed my children if I am unable to. OK, I know there are meds out there that can make you lactate, but that is just completely gross and weird to me.

Am I alone in this or would you be freaked out too? I told DH last night and I thought he was going to fall on the floor laughing (his mom is a little off her rocker anyhow).

OH GOOD LORD..... Now that takes the cake as far as I am concerned. Ick, ick and double ick.

And it really is just plain weird :p But hey, we've all got one in our family that it a little off their rocker don't we....

OMG that is so funny!

I think back a long time ago it was common for the nanny to nurse the baby. I know my friend's dad (who is in his 70s) was nursed by his German nanny - the woman who basically raised him.

    Danielle,

Thank you so much for sharing that story!!!! You know I needed a good laugh! That is so funny. Yes I agree she is a little off her rocker. What did you say to her when she said that? I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when that conversation was taking place!

It's a new trend...friends breast feeding for their friends. It totally freaks me out!

I think this is the article I read about it.

I understand maybe donating breast milk to other countries, but I can't imagine someone else breast feeding my child!

I know that in other societies in other countries this would be the way it's done, but Ewwww! Sorry!!! It's part of the bonding process with Mom and babies.

It is a very personal topic. If she is having issues with her own child, I don't see why she'd offer. Breastmilk is breastmilk. It is perfect. I honestly cannot see a doctor making that comment unless perhaps s/he was trying to be encouraging her to continue to provide it.
As a side note, I never had any changes in my breasts when I was pregnant with the twins and I produced more than enough. That is not an indication as to how it will work for you. Just keep an open mind and try. It may work, but because of your surgery, it may not.

eta: I see now it was your MIL and not your SIL who offered.

Question for you...did your SIL or MIL offer to Breastfeed your child? I got confused reading your post and then the responses! Sorry in advance!!

My apologies.. I thought it was your SIL who offered.. I see it was your MIL. FOR ME it would not be an option, but that was kind of her to offer!

To answer the question as to what I said...thankfully my FIL was also in the room and understands her social awkwardness. He managed to change the topic quickly after a quick look of panic and shock took over his face. Yes, she means well, but is extremely over-bearing anyhow and I don't want her trying to drive a wedge between me and my children...and that's a whole other story.

You are one strong woman! I hope that you are able to B/F if that is what you want to do. There are supplements that can help YOU feed YOUR children, if that is an interest pleese join us in the Breastfeeding Forum!

As for your MIL....God help her! where are you in FL? I am in Central Florida.

    Good luck to you,

    Missy

I'm in Pensacola in the panhandle. The issue is not that my glands won't produce, just that they might be in the wrong place totally. During my earlier surgery, my nipples were completely detached (minus the main artery), made smaller, moved up and re-attached. Hopefully I will be able to produce, but my surgeons and OBs have always said that they won't know until I give birth.

Wow - that is beyond bizarre. But for what it's worth, my best friend had a breast reduction and has had no problems bf'ing. She's just got the one baby, but I bet you'll be fine! Hey, but at least you've got a back up plan! (I kid...I kid.)

Well, I can't say it any better than that. Just....YUCK! (we were talking about wet nurses last week-my husband is British, and we live there, and we were joking that I could never have been the Queen cause I'd have said, "Um, no-I'll use a rag and some goats milk, thanks.!")

    OMG...

I, too, had breast reduction surgery and I really didn't produce much milk at all when it came in, so I did not bf. BUT, there are a lot of women that have been able to bf after that surgery and I hope that you are one of them, if that's what you want.

WOWSA - I think that should earn some type of TS prize for the most bizarre offer of help from a MIL

Do you think the idea just popped in her mind and she said it without thinking of all that would entail? or do you think she was really wanting to BF them? eeek!

I donated BM to the hospital in Denver (never heard of donating to other countries) but that is different that BF'ing someone elses child.

how old is your MIL? How long has it been since she lactated that her doc has "seen" her BM? That is just a bit creepy!
