I went in on Saturday, March 3rd to be induced. I was 37 weeks exactly. My doctor had me go in at 8:30 pm since we thought I'd be on cervadil overnight. In fact, I lost my mucous plug the day before and had tons of contractions all day Saturday. When I got into my room I was contracting constantly (though not terribly painful) and had dilated to 2 cm on my own that day. They told me they couldn't put me on cervadil b/c I was having too many contractions, so they were going to start me immediately on pitocin. I called my doctor on his cell (at about 10 pm) and he answered (I'll tell you a million times, but I LOVE my doctor.) He told the nurses to wait and see what my body would do on its own first- he gave me til 4 am and then they'd check me and see what was going on.

At 4 I had only gone from 2 to 2.5 so he had them start me on super low pitocin to see if it would kick start my own body. By about 8 am I'd only gotten to 3, and my doc had gotten to the hospital. He told me he thought we should turn up the pitocin a bit, so we did and things started to get painful. At that point I knew I should just get an epidural and let them use the pitocin to get me delivered. Baby A's placenta had some calcifications indicating it was getting old, I had gained like 10 pounds the last week from swelling, so it was time for them to come out.

Once I got the epidural it was another couple of hours before they checked me again. I hadn't dilated any more, but was completely effaced and the baby was moving lower, so he broke my water. That's when things really started moving. I went from 3-6 cm in a little under 2 hours. Then I started feeling very painful contractions again, but it didn't feel like pushing pressure, just pain in the front of my uterus. Those contractions were SUPER painful and so they gave me another dose of medication in the epidural. Then they checked me and I'd gone from 6-10 in about 45 minutes. Crazy!

They wheeled me into the OR to deliver (which sucked.) I could still feel all the contractions (though the edge was off) but my legs were completely numb. They moved me to a gurney and I could feel that Stella was about to come out. One push and her head was out, two and she was born! Super easy! 4:53 pm Sunday the 4th.

Then all h*ll broke loose. Charlotte (who had been breech) decided she'd take advantage of all that room and turn transverse. She was still pretty high up, so my doc cut an episiotomy and went in to find the cord to make sure it didn't slip down and become compressed. I almost passed out and Charlotte's heart was decelerating so they gave me oxygen- which helped both of us back to normal. My doc turned her vertex- one arm inside, one outside- it was almost painful, numb as I was. But everytime I pushed she started to go sideways. My doc decided we needed to wait til I was feeling contractions again.

Meanwhile some other doc had a scheduled CS and was pressuring my doc to do an emergency C or give up the anesthesiologist. My doc said they needed to wait. But my cervix had closed to an 8, so he told the nurses to bring the pitocin back in- they hooked me up. It was about 40 minutes later- my doc had his hand holding Charlotte's head the whole time, tension was building, and I knew if I didn't push her out soon I'd end up with an emergency C. I faintly felt a conraction and told him and he said "push!" with some urgency. I started pushing harder than I remember ever pushing before and my doc said "you're doing it" and there was so much relief in his voice. Matt was holding Stella and walked around to see and said "I can see her head!" And a couple of pushes later she was out! 5:37 pm! I was SO relieved.

Both my girls were perfect! Stella was 6 lb 5 oz and Charlotte was 6 lb 4 oz. They look so much alike! They stayed with us the whole itme- Stella's apgars were 9 and 9 and Charlotte's were 8 and 9 (b/c she was a little blue when she first came out.) No NICU time at all.

I'm just thrilled and delighted that my girls are healthy and happy and home with us. My two sons (5 and 2) are so excited about their twins. Thanks for all the support! See you on the first year board!
