My first ultrasound was WAY off!

I had my first perinatologist appt today, and my first u/s with my regular doc was way off. He said it looked like there were 2 seperate placentas and thought that both babies were boys.

    WRONG!

We're having identical twin girls that share a placenta and a chorion, but do have 2 seperate amnions.

It's a whole new ballgame now, with TTTS to worry about.

So, all MZ twin mommies...share with me! :)

WOW he was way off..lol I dont have any expirence with ID but im sure you will be watched more carefully..Good thing you saw a peri.

Had you bought anythign yet? How far along are you? I know if you get a gender u/s before 16 weeks it can still go either way..

They are in seperate amniotic fluid, but share a chorion which is the other (outer) layer.

I was 18 weeks along when we found out. I'm 21 weeks now. We haven't bought anything yet, b/c we THOUGHT it was 2 boys and have plenty of same-season clothes from DS.

DD was a summer baby, so Iwe'll have to get some winter 0-3 month girl clothes.

I have mono/di ID boys, and my Dr.s watched me closely for TTTS, so starting at 20 weeks I had U/S every 3 weeks, and starting at 30 weeks I had NST's every week, and then at 34 weeks had NST's twice a week. luckily things went VERY smoothly as far as TTTS is concerned. the neonatologist at the hospital suspected that there may have been the beginnings of a very slight case of TTTS there at the very end because Cameron's red blood cell count was elevated, but it wasn't enough to cause him problems, he was just darker red, kinda looked a little jaundiced for a couple weeks. but he's doing great!

Just a word of caution. I was also told that my babies shared a placenta. In fact, the peri had a hard time finding the dividing membrane. I can't remember how pregnant I was, but it was 26 weeks+. My boys are in fact fraternal with fused placentas. Apparently a diagnosis of one placenta is only accurate early in pregnancy. But at least the doc was right about the gender.

Congrats on your girls. Can't believe the doctor got that so wrong. I am sure that they will watch you much closer now.

We are expeciting mono/di boys -- I have been getting u/s once every 2 weeks to check for TTTS. So far the boys are doing just fine with that (keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way!) Congrats on your little girls!!!
