My doctor tried to schedule me for 36 weeks!

I went in for my OB appt. today and asked her if we could go ahead and schedule the c-section so I can get things taken care of with the insurance and what not. I told her I don't want to go before 37 weeks. She said, "Oh, well we usually schedule for 36." I pretty much told her I'm not comfortable with that so she said she'd schedule it for 37, and we could always reschedule if we had too. I'm just irritated about it. I don't hear anybody else saying that their doctor wanted to take the babies at 36 weeks! I am not having any issues with this pregnancy. My blood pressure has been better even than with my singleton pregnancy! I'm not even swelling! And my babies are growing ahead of shcedule! This has really been an easy pregnancy for me (other than the obvious since I'm carrying two but you know what I mean). I'm starting to question my doctor if she really knows what she's doing. I plan on talking to my Peri when I see him in 2 weeks. If I had found out early on that we were having twins, I might have looked for another doctor if it weren't for the fact that since she's done my section before I prefer her to do it again.

A lot of women have had their babies at 36 weeks and everything was perfectly fine. I had mine at 37 with no nicu time. How big are your babies right now?

Mine were identical so my peri would not let me go past 36 weeks.

My doctor is reserving the right to have me go at 36 weeks because my uterus is compromised from a fibroid surgery and I'm very short. I dont think its totally unheard of if your babies are a good size, lungs mature, etc. Depending on the woman and the situation, its not ALWAYS best to keep them in. I wouldnt necessarily be too hard on her.

My doc hasn't even brought up a timeframe yet. Honestly, I would LOVE it to be at 36 weeks. By 36 weeks they have the coating on their lungs, which are mature by then, and I have read that they have few difficulties, if any. Good luck!!!

Honestly, I'm with you on this one. My doc wouldn't schedule before 38 weeks. There are certainly situations that necessitate earlier action, and babies are born earlier without problems, but you cannot discount those last few weeks. There was just recently a study about how even a few weeks of prematurity appears to have affects on children - 35 to 36 week deliveries. If all is going well with your pregnancy, I would be very reluctant personally to schedule before 37 or 38 weeks. And if you didn't do ART, then they sometimes get the due dates off and it could mean a big difference. I have a friend who had her babies at 37 weeks, and they were tiny. The ultrasounds are way off. Ultimately, you have to trust your doctor, but I very much would be on the same page as you with your misgivings.

ETA: My doc scheduled at 38 and my water broke at 37.4.

My OB said that he scheduled the c-section before 38 weeks so on the 37 weeks.
and he dis schedule mine for 37 weeks. ( I did IVF so base on that info I would be 37w3d base on u/s and peri due date I woudl be only 37w1d)

If your babies are growing ahead of schedule there is a really good chance you will go into labor before 37 weeks.

Of course I totally understand you wanting to keep them in there as long as possible, but I don't really think this is something to be upset about. Absolutely talk to the peri about it. (I kind of feel like the best policy is to not schedule a date until 34 weeks, then schedule based on how they look then--but I delivered in a small little clinic where there was no worry about not getting in to an OR like there would be in a busy hospital.)

I think that if you are not comfortable with scheduling for 36 weeks then you should stick to scheduling your c-section for 37 weeks. It's no big deal to change the date as you get closer. I originally wanted to schedule mine for 38 1/2 weeks. My OB felt that btw 37 and 38 weeks would be better, but let me schedule it for the later date. Two weeks ago we moved it up to 37 1/2 weeks because my babies are measuring really big and my OB thought that I was very close to labor. Well here I am just about at 37 weeks and we're actually debating moving the date back.

My understanding from what I've read is that while 36 weeks is considered term, there is still a good chance that the babies might need a short amount of time in the NICU for minor issues. Once you get to 37 weeks, the chance of them needing to go to the NICU drops greatly. For this reason I would personally push for 37 weeks. I know that a lot of woman go into labor before then and their babies are fine, but if you are not in labor and there is no health reason to have the babies, I'm a firm believer in letting them cook as long as possible.

*I* think it is crazy to schedule for 36 weeks when the longer they bake (Generally) the better. Good for you for sticking to your guns! (Standing your ground)

My babies hardly changed from week 36 to week 37. It was minute. I think that if your babies are at a good weight and their heartbeats are good then you should feel blessed to be some of the few to have them be healthy and be born early. In the next few weeks you will be wanting them out sooooo badly! LOL

I was begging my OB to schedule me for 35 weeks! But seriously, she wouldn't talk about induction or c-section until I hit 37 weeks. But my peri would have scheduled me for 36 weeks. In the end, it didn't matter because I went into labor at 34 weeks.

Hey, we are only two days apart! My OB is thinking about scheduling me at 36 weeks, depending on the next couple of weeks. I went to the peri today and my babies are 3lb. 10oz. and 3lb. 8oz. Just think if you do go at 36 weeks we could have 4th of July babies!

I asked my Ob this question before I picked her. She told me they wont even think about a c-section before 38 weeks unless its an emergency.

A lot of drs base their belief's on inductions in general due to personal experience i've noticed. There are drs that refuse to go past 37 or 38 weeks with twins because they've had tragedies occur after those weeks due to placenta breakdown or whatnot. From what i've learned, twins can be ticking timebombs and you want them to cook as long as possible without them cooking to the point of going into distress from various causes. I would trust your gut on how you feel your body is handling your pregnancy. If everything has been going so well, try to push it out as long as you can. Good luck!

this would be my concern as well. i would say trust your gut - it sounds like you & your babies are doing swimmingly. unless a reason crops up to move things along, it's better to let them cook as long as possible.

Both my OB and Peri said they didn't want me to go beyond 36 weeks. My boys were born at 36 weeks on the dot. Jonathan spent 36 hours in the NICU, and then was switched to the regular nursery. Marcus was always in the regular nursery. They both went home with me at 3 days old. BTW, Jonathan was the biggest baby in the NICU at 6-10, Marcus was 6-2.

Your doc is trying to get you to deliver early..and mine is trying to make me hold them in as long as possible. He told me that my due date is still what it was when I thought that I was having a singleton (40 wks.) I want to deliver at 37 wks. even if I have to start walking alot at 36 wks. to get the babies to drop! :umm:

Mine were born healthy at 37.5 weeks after an induction BUT if they did struggle with breastfeeding and body temperature and I often wonder if it was related to their "prematurity". If I had it to do over again I'd try to wait until 38+ weeks. But that's just me.

Had you asked me back then, I would have had them at 36 weeks in a heartbeat!

In retrospect, the longer they stay in the better (as long as you have 2X week NST's and regular scans)

I do not understand why so many people want to deliver at 35/36 weeks. I was pregnant with twins. I was in pain. I was miserable and could barely walk. And mine were about 14 pounds altogether, so I get it. I get how badly you want it to be over. But NO WAY would I schedule a delivery before 37 weeks unless there was a solid medical reason to do it. I was actually doing my best to avoid NICU time for my babies, not thinking a little bit is okay. And I know a lot of twin moms who would have given anything to cook the babies a little longer and avoid the NICU time. Especially with new research showing that even a little prematurity can have lasting effects. They may not change in size a lot, but there is lung and brain development going on. I'm not trying to be mean, but I really don't get it. Sorry.

That's the way I feel too, and that's why I wouldn't agree to let her take them at 36 weeks. If there is an emergency we can always go in, but no way I'm going to schedule anything for that soon. Even 37 was a little hard to agree to. I think I would have liked to try for 38 if all was going well. Whatever. As long as they are healthy and strong....

My OB has said from the time I met w him about twins that he wouldn't let me go past 37weeks. He said that it's actually dangerous for twins to go past 38 weeks. I'd be comfortable w having the babies at 36 weeks.
