Hi ladies.....My daughter is 17 weeks pregnant with twins. She had a miscarriage around Thanksgiving, and it has made me really nervous with this pregnancy, where I was never nervous with mine or with her first pregnancy with her 3 1/2 year old son. This morning she called and said she didn't feel well, that she had vomited this morning......which she has never done with this pregnancy. She went on to work and at her lunch hour, she called me and said she was feeling really bad. I told her to go home and lay down and if she didn't feel better to call off work for this afternoon. She called an hour later and said she still didn't feel better, and she had called off work. I told her to call her dr....that it was probably nothing, but with her history and being pregnant with twins I thought her doc should know. The doctor called back 3 hours later, and told her to take 1/2 of a B6 pill and 1/2 of a unisom. Did anyone else ever have these symptoms? She said she is really sick to her stomach and her back is aching. I asked her if she is having any kind of contractions and she said no. Sorry to be such a nervous Nelly, but I never ever want to see the look on her face as I did when she lost the baby. If I can do anything.....anything at all to help her I will.

don't know if this will make you feel any better, but i had the same thing going on at 9 weeks pregnant, and it ended up being the stomach flu. i puked for 4 days straight and then had diarrhea for another 2 days. it was AWFUL. i was scared of losing the babies, too, but it was just a stomach bug. she probably just got exposed to a nasty virus and will have to wait for it to work itself thru her system... keep us posted.

Thanks so much for your reply to my message. I hope it is just a stomach bug. Her work is kind of stressful, and I worry about that for her. I've found this site so helpful with my questions, as well as hers.....you ladies are GREAT!

It is the "summer sickness" season that starts when kids start going back to school. MY DH and both of my girls have been sick for close to a week with a flu like bug. So far I have managed to avoid it but I am not surprised to hear it is going around where you are too. The unisom/B6 combo works well and should help her rest too. The main thing is staying hydrated so be sure to push the fluids on her.

Thank you so much! I hadn't heard of anyone having the flu, but she does work in the public, so it's quite possible she has been exposed to someone outside my circle. Does anyone know what B6 is for? I know that unisom is a sleep aide, but not sure what B6 will do for her.

    Hi Nana!
Just let me say your daughter is so lucky to have you.
Now, Vitamin B6 is often used to help alleviate severe nausea due to morning sickness in that first trimester. It works for some ladies, the rest of us have no luck with it...lol. (Can you tell I tried and had no luck! :D)

It could indeed well be a tummy bug-there's a nasty gastric flu going around in most countries right now. Don't rule out the simple things first. She could have eaten something that didn't agree with her too-it's the body's way of making sure Mom doesn't eat anything that is off, or not good for the babies. It could be a slight case of food poisioning or she could be getting pregnancy induced lactose intolerance. Also, I had, with my first son, what my OB called "late onset morning sickness". I felt great til I was about 10 or 12 weeks on and then it hit me like a freight train. As far as the aching back, I'm only 16 weeks into this twin pregnancy and having backaches and round ligament pain (like aching in the front of the pelvis area) like I didn't have with my first son till I was 7 months on. So, she could be having ligament pain this early and that's giving her the backache.

Tell her to rest and drink a load of water-I'm sending her some mental chicken soup! :D

Miscarrying is a horrible thing to go through, I know. I've been there, five times. But I'm here to tell you, as hard as it is, if you let your mind go there whenever she starts to feel icky, she's gonna freak out too. Concentrate on *this* pregnancy. Assume nothing. Remember, her doctor works for her, and if she wants to call him every time she feels funny, it's his job to take those calls and reassure her! Don't let him fob her off!
Unfortunatley, worrying won't do any good. If it did, all five of those babies of mine would be here now, sweetheart. I know it's so, sosososososo hard. But you've got to try and not think like that until there's a concrete reason to. The best advice I ever got from mymidwife was "Don't worry about things that haven't happened yet. "
I'm here if either of you ever want to talk-you can email me at [email protected]

Thank you so much for your kind reply. This site is such a joyous place, and I feel so blessed to have found you ladies! As for Amber (twin mommy to be)....she is feeling better today, and hopefully it was just a 24 hour kind of stomach bug. I'm trying not to get nervous every time she has a little ache or pain, and I try to never let her know I'm nervous. It made me feel so much better to be able to come here and express my feelings, and to get such kind responses and suggestions.

Hi ladies.....I guess I'm just coming back here for a little more ressurance. My daughter WAS better yesterday, but last night she vomited after eating dinner, and hasn't been able to keep anything down again today. (so that's three days of her being sick). She called her drs office and the nurse was kind of rude to her and told her they can't do anything further for her, that she'll have to go to the ER. Their hospital is an hour away....which really doesn't matter......but finally I convinced her that she should go into the ER.....if nothing more I think an ultrasound to ressure her the babies are ok will help her feel better. SonIL just called and said they are on their way to the hospital. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you so much! Nana

Before I knew I was pregnant with twins at 16 weeks right during Christmas last year, I had the worst case of stomach flu. I was puking and out the other end at the same time. I didn't eat anything for 5 days straight. The Drs. said they would have let me go a couple more days before doing anything more drastic. I'm sure glad I didn't know I was carrying twins cause I would have been doubly worried. Both were born healthy and are healthy now. I'll keep her in my prayers.

Hugs to all of you! Let us know-we're praying all the way from England! Even if she ends up with hyperemesis (where she can't even keep liquids down) they should give her something at the ER to help her, and get her on some fluids. Keep us posted Grandma!

Thanks for caring everyone! Amber went to the hospital yesterday afternoon. They gave her fluids and an anti nausea medicine via IV, along with a prescription for anti nausea medicine. She stayed at the hospital until almost bedtime, and this morning she is feeling much better. They listened to the babies heartbeats with the doppler and said they were strong....one was in the 170s and the other in the 180s I think. The doctor also wrote her an order to be off work till next Monday so she is resting at home. Thanks again for your reassurances!

It sounds like your daughter is going through what I went through for the first 4 months. I've read that around this time period (I'm 17 weeks also) your nausea and vomitting can either take a turn for the better or suddenly get worse (or appear out of nowhere). Though I have no experience with miscarriages, I'm a pro at the vomitting thing now. I took phenergen for a solid week just to be able to keep anything in me. Now the B vitamins are helping, but my biggest advice would be to eat what your body craves and don't let your tummy get empty. Those babies get testy when they're hungry!

I'll be keeping your daughter and family in my prayers. Keep us posted!

Amber was feeling bad again yesterday, and took some Prevacid, which she said really relieved her...she said she felt like she was full of gas that wouldn't escape. She felt better soon and was finally able to eat after a week. She is much better this morning and went to work. Thanks again ladies for your reassurances!
