My children are bottomless pits!

Ainsley and Bea have been eating everything in sight and saying they are hungry. Is this a growth spurt? They are big kids, and because obesity runs in our families, I worry about them eating too much, but they do seem geniunely hungry. I've just never seen them eat like this. Today at a playgroup, Ainsley ate an entire cereal bar, then wanted some of Bea's, then was staring at another child's snack like she was some starving street urchin.

  Our kids are 5 days apart and let me tell you my boys are acting the very same way. One goes around the house saying EAT EAT. Yesterday we went to visit my neighbor and he started going through her snacks saying EAT EAT. The other twin eats his food and steals from his brother's plate. If Nico is holding food in his hand, Jon will run by and steal it right out and Nico won't even know what happened until he goes to take a bite. They eat more than my friend's 5-year old.

One would think we NEVER fed them!

I always joke that Andrew has a hollow leg! He can eat and eat and eat (like his daddy). I don't think kids can overeat healthy foods (like fruits, vegetables, etc.) so I never restrict those. I would only worry if they wanted copious amounts of juice, candy, etc. If they want another apple, etc. why not!? It sounds like a growth spurt to me!

We are right there with you. They eat from the time they get home from the time they get home from daycare until they go to bed. I always say they will ruin supper but nope. About 30 min after eating supper they say snack snack until I get them something. They can eat and eat. I am beginning to think I may have to get a 2nd job to support their eating habits. :p

We just went through an eating spree and I wasn't sure if it was a growth spurt or post-illness catch up but it went on for 2 weeks after their illness so I'm thinking it was both. They're still eating pretty heavily but not like that crazy time. I believe they did grow because they measured 1/4 size bigger when I double-checked for buying sandals on Sunday than they did for sneakers two weeks ago. They were also going though a banana crave eating 2 bananas each per day. Of course, as soon as I'd bought another big bunch, they decided they were done and now I need to make banana bread

Hi there. I'm not sure about the whole growth spurt thing. My boys are only one. But I just wanted to comment on the obesity thing. I worried about that a little when my guys were eating me out of house and home as young babies. When we started solids they were eating WAY more than expected, plus drinking tonnes of milk. But then I change my mind set. It's not necessarily HOW MUCH they eat, it's WHAT they eat. So long as you're offering healthy choices, I wouldn't worry or limit quantities. When was the last time you heard of someone gaining incredible amounts of weight on carrots, apples, whole-grain muffins, or other healthy foods? I'd just go with it and offer them the healthiest meals and snacks possible.

    I agree.

Healthy snacks they can go to town on. We are not big cereal bar eaters here because there are better choices for us. Many of them are just a step up from a candy bar.

cameron and alisha have days or meals like this too - where you would think we had NEVER fed them before - and to the point that we get comments about it from anyone who observes them - family, friends, strangers at restaurants - it's actually a little embarrassing!

however, then they'll have meals where alisha will only drink her milk but not eat anything and cameron might just eat fruit and nothing else for a meal. so, i'm hoping it will just even out.

at the same time, i feel like every time i put on alisha's pants, they are shorter - i've finally accepted that 2ts are too short for her and am buying 3ts instead and just cinching the waists in as far as they will go. so maybe it really is a growth spurt?

btw - i have to admit to secretly liking that they are good eaters - i get so much joy from food and i love that they do too - i couldn't imagine having a child who didn't eat anything!

It's an organic cereal bar and I have researched the ingredients Nature's Choice cereal bars. I only do those or Yotta bars (made with vegetables), and not every day.

I think my boys are constantly undergoing a growth spurt!!! They can pack it away! But then again so does my DH. Guess I shouldn't wonder why I spend close to a grand at the grocery store every month.

It does get embarrassing when your around other kids that don't eat that much. Last week at preschool, they celebrated Dr. Suess' b-day by cooking green eggs and ham. When I picked them up, their teacher said, "Debbi, I can only imagine what your grocery bill will be when your boys become teenagers." She went on to tell me that Luke asked for 2 helpings and Ben ate 3 entire plates of it. Mind you Ben is 43 inches and maybe 35lbs. I just don't know where it goes???

We have days like this too... Lately it's been Natalie doing the eating, which is really good as she is SO small still. They both have days when they wont eat anything so I try not to obsess when they do. They both LOVE salad right now. I took them to lunch with one of my friends and she cracked up when I ordered chicken tenders and asked to replace the fries with salad. Everyone was laughing when they started saying, "MO salud please."

Same here! My boys go through 3 gallons of milk a week, and are eating us out of house and home. We've got a new baby coming and need to save money, so this is really bad timing for a major growth spurt! I hope it's over soon. We've been spending up near $200/wk on groceries lately.
