My boys are here!

Hello!

I didn't post to the forum much during my pregnancy but I read it almost everyday. But I did want to post my birth story because I really enjoyed reading everyones stories here. I had hoped it would help be better prepared for what would/could happen. Unfortunately for our family we had some obstacles that I didn't read about here!

My water broke on July 18th at 12:30am. I was downstairs in my living room and when I stood up it broke. I went upstairs to the bathroom and I told my husband to call my doctor. While he was on the phone I realized that I could feel something. I then realized I was feeling the cord coming out. This is what they call a prolapsed cord for those that don't know ( I didn't!)

She told my husband to immediately call 911 and the paramedics arrived almost immediately. I was very fortunate to have someone that realized the severity of the situation and knew exactly what position to put me in. I was on my knees, head on the floor, butt in the air. He managed to get the baby's butt off the cervix, hold the cord so that he could feel a pulse and they had to get me to the hospital in that position. He walked me right into the OR. I didn't get to go to my hospital because it wasn't the closest to my home and they said I didn't have any time to waste, I needed surgery right away. They immediately did the C-section and the babies were born at 1:14am and 1:15am.

Carter James was first and he was the one that was compromised. He is currently in one of the hospitals in Philadelphia. He has suffered some brain injury from the lack of oxygen when the cord was prolapsed. He had a cooling cap on for three days and was having a lot of seizure activity. He wasn't breathing on his own and his heartbeat was 60 when he was born...over half of what it should have been. He is in good hands and they are doing everything that they can to help him. He is off the ventilator after 5 days and off of one of the seizure meds. He hasn't had another seizure since Wednesday morning....so he is doing much better. They have no idea when he will be able to come home. They have started to feed formula with a tube to see if he is able to digest. He has had a few setbacks but it looks like we are headed in the right direction.

Jacob Cole was my second baby and he is doing fine. About a pound less than his brother, he didn't suffer at all during his birth and he is home with us. Keeping us up all night is his favorite past time.

I just wanted to share my story so that you are aware that this can happen. The doctors told me it is extremely rare and that I just had some bad luck! Not really reassuring but I am trying to get past my guilt that I could have prevented it in some way.

Congrats on the birth of your boys! Here's to hoping Carter can come home soon! Try not to feel guilty momma you did good by realizing the cord was coming out!!! I had a friend who that happened to (only she was already in the hospital at that time) and all turned out just fine. :hug: So glad you shared your story!
