My birth story--FINALLY!

My babies were born at 37 weeks on Wednesday, January 24. I had my 37 week check-up on the morning of the 23rd. I was between 2 and 3 cm dilated. My doctor decided to strip my membranes to see if that could get things moving along. I also had a growth scan that day, which said our girl weighed 6 lb. 10 oz, and our boy was 6 lb. 4 oz. I was really shocked since our first son only weighed 6 lb. 8 oz. at 40 weeks!

That day progressed just like normal, a few contractions here and there, but that's all. My doctor suggested that I walk, so around 5:00, my husband, son, and I all headed to the mall to do just that. We walked for about 45 minutes. My contractions really picked up, but that happened anyway, so I really didn't take things seriously.

Around 6:30, they really started coming regularly (every 3-5 minutes). I quickly took a shower and packed up some last minute things just in case. Once I got everything ready and my in-laws got there, I was having contractions every 2 minutes.

We arrived at the hospital. Once checking me out and calling the doctor, they told me I could go on and get my epidural. Yea! My epidural quit working completely, though, when I was 9 cm dilated. It was too late in the game to get any other pain medicine, so I basically had the babies naturally.

I delivered in the OR just in case, but I was able to deliver vaginally (thank goodness!). Our girl, Anna Morgan, came first weighing 5 lb. 11 oz. and 18 inches long. Six minutes later, Asher Timothy was born weighing 5 lb. 2 oz and 18 3/4 inches long. The u/s was off a pound or more on BOTH babies!

Both are healthy now, although we got off to a rough start. Both were severely jaundiced, requiring a couple extra nights in the hospital. Our little boy got down to 4.6 lbs, and he couldn't maintain his body temperature. He needed a feeding tube and incubator for quite a while. We finally got him home from the hospital 11 days later.

We have all been home now for about a month, and they are six weeks old tomorrow. Life is hectic and sometimes a blur, but they are wonderful! My little boy (who is 2 1/2) loves them so much, too. We are truly blessed and couldn't be happier.

I wish you all the best with your babies. It gets so miserable at the end, but try to hang in there, especially those of you having little boys. According to our docs, they are much weaker, and even at 37 weeks can have quite a few problems. I really regret being so anxious to get them out.

Best wishes to you all. Sorry this was sooooooooooooo incredibly long.

COngratulations! [IMG] I'm so glad everything worked out for you with the delivery and that your older son is adjusting well.

We're also a toddler + twins household so I can relate to your feelings that these first weeks have been a big blur. I actually have to stop and calculate how old my twins are from time to time because I get lost in all the action [IMG].

Congrats on the new babies!! I completely understand about life being a blur. Our oldest daughter was 2.5 years when our twin girls were born. It often seemed like life was this whirl-wind and as hard as I tried to stay in the wind, it kept spinning me out. I can't really tell you when the winds died down, but they eventually did. Now, don't get me wrong, we still have days that I stop and go "what just happened?". I suppose our lives calmed down quite a bit, because we felt the need to add a baby boy to our family about 14 months ago. This time things weren't such a blur....still hectic, but not a blur. I wish you and all of your babies the best of luck! Take care.

Congrats and glad to hear all is well. We are close to being a toddler/twin household (dd is 22 mo) and I am quite a bit nervous about it. One day at a time, right?
