I don't know if I had mentioned this previously or not, but we found out we were having twins at our 20 week ultrasound, so we've known for just over 4 weeks that we were having two. At the initial ultrasound we were told that we were having a boy and a girl. 75% sure of the boy and 99% sure of the girl.

The ultrasound brought about a change......it is now very clear that we are having two little girls. :) Now to come up with a second girl name......something my husband and I just don't agree on. The measurements are: Baby A is at 23 weeks 3 days, weighs 1 lb 5 oz, is in the 33rd percentile and is head down. Baby B is 24 weeks 2 days, weighs 1 lb 8 oz, is in the 51st percentile and is breech. We will have to monitor their weights to make sure they do not get more then 20 percentile points apart, because that can be indicative of a problem. Their placentas are completely opposite each other, so as of right now, that is not a concern. The doctor said that one baby may just end up being smaller overall.

I have to start drinking Ensure or Boost three times a day to increase my weight gain. I've only gained 12 pounds thus far and I really do not have an appetite on most days.

Otherwise we're all very healthy and everything is looking wonderful.

Oh my goodness!!! So how did you react to the change of news?!!! Congratulations on the girls and glad to hear that things went well for you! Let's hope that the extra protein will help with weight gain. I too was put on a high-protein diet.

I've actually been laughing a lot at all the changes in news. Before our first ultrasound I said to my husband, "What if we find out it's twins? We're going to have to rethink all of our plans and arrangements." Then before this ultrasound I said to him, "What if we find out it's two girls? How are we going to pick out a second girl name?" After my appointment I called him and said that I will no longer talk to him before ultrasounds, because it all comes true.

Life is throwing us curve balls, but at least they're ones we can handle. I don't think I've stopped laughing. We just keep looking at each other and going, what the heck? The only reason we were liking one boy and one girl is because we have a ton of boy clothes from our son. Now we just have more stuff to buy. :)

:itwins: What a shock that must have been!

Try not to stress about the weight gain as long as the babies are growing continuously. I gained 6 pounds my entire pregnancy and had perfectly healthy babies with not a moment of NICU time.

Congrats - what a surprise! Like Dianne said, try not to worry too much about the weight gain. I only gained 14 pounds and my kiddos were both over 6 pounds and we all went home together after 2 days - no NICU time.

wow! what a shocker! I thought maybe you were going to say that they found a third! I was pretty thin before my twin pg and only gained 31 pounds...which is just over the recommended minimum of 30-35 pds.... you have some time to increase that 12 pounds naturally without worrying too much...as long as the babies sizes were okay. Perhaps with the one being 33rd percentile they are more concerned with getting that number up? thus the recommended protein drinks?

Okay, sounds like you need to stop making predictions unless they're ones you want, LOL. Congrats on your girls!!

(I've heard of them being wrong the other way -- they miss a penis, somehow -- but it's unusual for it to fall off. Heehee!)

Here's what I drink every morning, instead of Boost or Ensure, because I'm trying to limit my soy intake:

    One banana
    One cup milk
    4 oz. flavored yogurt
One scoop whey protein powder (I have vanilla ice cream flavor, from GNC)
    Large handful of frozen fruit

Just blend together.....sometimes I add a packet of Carnation Instant Breakfast for the extra vitamins and chocolate flavor, and the bit of extra protein -- this is about 35 to 40 grams of protein total, plus other healthy stuff....and it goes down pretty easily.

I can't imagine finding out at 20 weeks -- what a surprise that must have been!

Thanks for all the great thoughts ladies! I'm loving this site! Anyway, I think that the doctor is most concerned about the babies and I getting enough nutrients. I really haven't had an appetite at all during this pregnancy and because with my last pregnancy I was severely anemic, I think it's just nutrition concern more then weight. I just think that the weight is connected with the fact that I'm not eating.

    Anyway, thanks ladies.....you're all great!

Wow, what a surprise. I dont know what I'd do if we found out ours weren't boy and girl.... We have pretty much everything we need right now.... in boy and girl form. lol. At least we do have a girl name picked out as another choice, we'd just have to pick her middle name. Boy-boy would be so hard if we learnt that.

Thats really something, what a surprise for you. Its all good :)
For those who mentioned they only gained about 14 lbs and 30-35lbs, were you carrying up front, rather than all around belly? I too was thin before pregnancy, was 135lbs and only gained about 20lbs so far and I'm 31 weeks. I'm all belly and carrying low. Did your OB/Peri think you were measuring small during your pregnancies?
