My almost 7-monthers don't sit up yet

My babies don't sit up yet. They can be propped, but it has to be a very sturdy prop, not just an assistance sort of prop.

I am worried about it, as it seems like at 7 months this should be something they (or at least one of them) do. They will be 7 months next week.

Did anyone else have late sitters and everything was fine?

Do you mean they don't sit up unassisted? Or that you can get them to sit but need a prop or else they fall over? Norah can sit, when she wants to. My DH has NEVER seen Norah sit without immediately throwing herself back. Is it possible they just don't want to sit like Norah? To encourage sitting, I feed her sitting on the floor and she has a much bigger interest in sitting now!

My babies are 7 months and only my DD sits up unassisted...I am not worried at all. (which is shocking for me not to be worried about something!?!) Now, by 8 months, I hope they both can sit up!? I would not worry - every baby is different.

They don't sit up without assistance, meaning they will sit upright if I prop them up in boppys, pillows, etc. If I sit them up and let go of them, they just topple over.

My son is like Norah, he will throw himself backward. I'll try feeding them on the floor and see if that encourages sitting, that's a great idea!

And I'll try not to worry. But it's hard not to, as you all know.

7 months is still early. I would not be too concerned! Babies do things on their own time schedule. They are put on this earth to worry you!! Give it another month and they'll be sitting like pros! You can help them by putting them on the floor between your legs for support. It gives them a little practice and then they'll use the muscles needed. But, it's still early yet! :hug99:

I agree, 7 months is still early! Jake sat up at 8 months. He was actually crawling before he sat up! :hug99:

no worries- gage didn't start sitting unassisted until right before 8 mos & keira was about 8.5 mos. he took awhile of trying & falling over a lot- she just started doing it great all of a sudden. i think she learned from her brother's mistakes- smart girl!!

I agree, no worries! My youngest didn't start sitting up on his own until just before 8 months. After that, everything came at once...crawling, pulling up, teeth. They'll get it, just give it a little bit longer! :)

Mine were early sitters, but just in case this makes you feel better, one of them didn't roll over till 8 months! She just never cared to.

Do you have a Bumbo? My girls actually didn't like it much, but a lot of babies do like it, and it can help with upper body strength.

We also encouraged sitting by propping them up facing their stim gym (so that the toys were hanging in front of them, just within reach, rather than overhead).

We had professional pics done at 7m for in their Christening outfits and DH and I had to go behind the curtains and hold them up by their lower backs. The pics came out cute and they are kinda leaning on each other. They were about 8 months when they could sit up unassisted, don't worry.

Natalie still needs a lot of help sitting. Hannah can sit for a long time -to help her I spread her feet out far apart for balance.

I posted the same question around the age of your babies too. I was worried and eveyone said not to be worried. I dont have my notes in front of me so I cant remember exactly but my guess was it was around 8 months when they could sit by themselves.

Mason can sit up and now crawl (they are almost 8 months) but Abigail has not sat on her own yet. if we sit her down she can sit pretty good but she has not done it on her own.

A PT told me that they she didn't expect babies to sit until 8 months, so no worries. Also, she told me the best way to help them sit was put them on their tummies SOOOOOOOO much, as that builds the right muscles for sitting. So, after so many months of trying to get mine to sit, I gave up for 3 weeks and put them on their stomachs a LOT those 3 weeks. Then one day I tried to get them to sit, and POOF they both did!

Mine didn't sit until they were 10 months. It was as if it happened over night too. We went to Disney World the first week of Dec. and they were not sitting up then, but when we came back they could. :unknw: All they did was sit in the stroller while we were there or we would take them out for a ride or something, maybe that was it all that sitting in the stroller. We used to put the boppy around them so they could sit up to help strengthen their back muscles. Our PT told me also that tummy time helps to strengthen back muscles. I wouldn't worry just yet.

I think Josie was about 7.5 months before she sat well unassisted - so about 6 months if you adjust her age. Bella was in a body cast for a while, so she didn't unassisted until she was about 10 months old.

i also worry. mine also don't sit up and they are 7 months. they both roll over and are starting to try to crawl, aka getting their bellies off the floor.

my older son started sitting unassisted at 5 1/2 months but he couldn't really roll over very well and he was no where near crawling like my twins are. I just decided that I need to help them work on that everyday.

Thanks for posting it. it made me also feel better!

Thank you all so much for taking the time to reply. I feel a lot better now. :)

Kathleen and Amy, thanks so much for that info. about tummy time helping their stomach muscles - I would have never thought of that, but it makes a lot of sense. I am definitely going to do more tummy time from now on.
