Mucous discharge after Cervix exam

    Hi Everyone,

I have been reading posts for a little while now and have to say I am so happy I found you all. This is my first time posting - I have a question that has me a bit concerned....perhaps for no reason.

    I am 26 weeks 5 days with my first pregnancy - boy & girl!!! :icon_biggrin: :icon_biggrin:

On Thursday I started feeling a new sensation - starting at my bikini line and around the whole groin area, for about 30 seconds I feel a very strong pain. This pain is not constant, it comes and goes every few hours.

I went to L&D as recommended by my OB - I was hooked up to fetal monitors and a contraction monitor and everything seemed ok. They believe it is just regular round ligament pain. Before I left, the Dr. asked the nurse to check my cervix to make sure it was still closed. It is. Gotta say, that exam was not pleasant - in fact, that exam hurt a bit. The nurse said it is not uncommon to experiece some discharge 24-48 hours after an exam.

Today, when going to the bathroom (sorry if TMI) I noticed a glob of mucous, brown tinged, in the toilet. It took quite a few wipes to completely wipe away the rest of the mucous. It was mostly clear with hints of dark brown.

Has anyone had an exam and experienced that much discharge after an exam? Is it normal for them to check me manually instead of using an u/s?

I am trying to convince myself that it was not the mucous plug.

Any advice / shared experience would be so much appreciated!!!

I actually had something similar happen to me around 22 weeks. Only difference was I was contracting on the monitors while in L&D. But while I was there, they did a spectulum (sp? actually is that the right word??lol I blame pregnancy brain if its not) and let me tell you I was in some severe pain! That was actually worse then the contractions!! After that, I had a lot of discharge and some of it had blood in it, but the doctor told me it was totally normal. A lot of times the doctors have tried to find my cervix through the u/s but baby a lays across it so they have to check me the old fashioned way. However, the only time I ever experienced any type of bleeding or discharge was with the spectulum... I would give the doctor a call, just to give yourself piece of mind. Remember, thats what they're there for!

    Hope this helps!

    Shannon

    Welcome! Glad you are posting!

I would absolutely call. I have never lost my plug, but from reading other's stories, it kind of sounds like what you are describing. Hopefully not. Update us when you can. :hug99:

I also wanted to tell you about the Big Sis program at TS. We will match you with a mom of twins, that will be there for support and friendship throughout your twin journey. Click on the link in my signature for details! Hope you join!

So did you call? I hope so, just to set your mind at ease. I did not have a manual cervical check until I was 28 weeks, but before then I had many using a transvaginal u/s. After my manual checks, I always had bleeding, but with bright red blood and no discharge. I am sure, after what the nurse said, that your discharge is normal, but I certainly would call just to be safe.

    And welcome to TS! :)

I've been getting regular cervical checks since 27 wks for PTL and occasionally I'll have some light brown spotting afterwards, but not usually an increase in mucous.

Let us know what your doctor says! :unknw:

I had lots of mucous discharge after exams, even the type you described. I never lost my plug that I know of either.

Welcome, glad you decided to post!

Just thought I would update everyone - well, it was the mucous plug after all and the discomfort I was feeling was contractions.

I went to the hospital on that Sunday morning, July 29th and was immediately admitted. The doctors thought they would have to give me a c-section that night because I was 2 cm dilated and 70% efaced - one of the amniotic sacs had descended down the vaginal canal and could be seen visually seen during an exam. The risk was that the sac would rupture and my sons legs and umbilical cord would fall through and cinch.

They immediately gave me one of the two steroid shots and after some discussion the doctors decided to wait a day - and see. The contractions continued, I was put on magnesium (horrible drug), I was inverted so that my head was lower than my body. I made it 11 days. I had my son & daughter on 8/8 at 28 weeks 3 days. Robert was born 2 lbs 3 oz and Eleni was born 2 lbs.

The 11 days on strict bedrest were very hard but worth every minute. My husband was my hero - stayed by my side the entire time. Slept at the hospital and did more for me than I ever thought a human being would do for another.

The babies are in the NICU - they are doing very well. So far all tests performed show normal results (big sigh of relief). Robert is now 3 lbs 3 oz and Eleni is 2 lbs 14 oz.

I expect to bring the babies home by mid October (their due date was October 29th).

I want to thank the ladies that responded and hope everyone's pregnancy on this great site goes without incident. I found it very comforting to post when I was having my issues.

    Thanks again! :friends:

Congrats, sounds like they are doing well and that is good. I am sure the 11days were tough but you have two beautiful babies to show for it and like you said it was worth it.

Congratulations!!! Thank goodness you followed your instincts and kudos to you for the fantastic job you did keeping those babes tucked in until 28 weeks! What a difference those 11 days are going to make for your son and daughter. I hope your nicu stay is uneventful and that you are all home together soon!

What an experiance! It sounds like things were pretty stressful for a while! I am sure you are glad to have your babies even though the timing was not quite what you expected. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family as you recover and your babies get ready to come home! I am sure it is hard to have them there, I am not looking forward to that possibility myself! Keep reading and posting on twinstuff though because I am sure that others have been there and will be a great source of support and experience!

    Good Luck & Congratulations!

Wow, congrats on the birth. I'm so glad you were able to carry them that extra amount of time. Good for you! I hope they get to come home soon and have a relatively short NICU stay. Best of luck to you and your little ones.
