I am thinking its time to move onto stage 3 baby food, since it says 'crawler' on the label. I am just so worried about it! They are able to pick up things with their thumb & finger (for the most part) and chew on the gerber baby stars, wheels, biter bisquits, and all that good stuff. I am just so worried that if they aren't feeding themselve something, they won't chew. Will they KNOW to chew the chunkier food, even though its coming from the spoon? I am terrified of them choking on the food. HELP! :(

I too am getting ready to move to Stage 3. They do very well with picking things up and putting food in their mouth. But I still plan on putting some food on a spoon. For instance, for dinner, they will get veggies (they feed themselves) and potato/rice mixed with meat that I will feed on a spoon.

I think that I will need to feed them by spoon for a while and I will make sure things are very soft, but you should be fine. It may take a little time, but be patient. I am sure they will tell you what they need.

Soft food and they will gum away!!

They may take it fine or may be weirded out at first. Don't give up - they will be okay. Just little bites to start out. We have done some chicken and stars, etc. out of the jar because they won't yet eat the meat I have baked and shredded for them. I thought they would take it easy since they are doing finger food but it was weird coming off a spoon for them. I would say after about 4-5 times they shrug it off. Good luck!

Thanks! I think at exactly 9 months we will start trying it (mainly because of the pantry full of stage 2  ). Also, my girls have been spliting a jar of stage 2, should we continue to split a stage 3 jar between them?

Go slow, very small bites. I bet it will go great, if not you can always back down to 2s again.

Well, we've been on stage 3 foods since around 6.5-7 months, but I can say that they adjusted just fine :) Go slow, small bites at first. The "bites" are really very small, and very soft, so they may gag a bit on the chunks but they won't actually "choke" very easily! :)

They will automatically chew it if it's chunky. Take it slow, start with small bites & they will do just fine! Good luck!

Mine also have been eating stage 2 and 3 for about 3 months now. I also give them cheerios avocados and banana pieces to feed themselves. Small pieces of bread, beans cut in half and anything I think they can gum pretty easily. Im sure they will do great! you can also keep feeding them stage 2, I still do with everything they eat. I want to make sure they are getting enough veggies and fruits. Good luck!

Whenever I give my kids chunky food I make sure to keep a sippy cup filled with water handy, and give them some when I feel they are having difficulty swallowing. Good luck.
