One of my boys would do this ocassionaly when just about to fall asleep, but now seems to be doing it more and more. Any ideas on what the reason could be. I am wondering if his ears are bothering him, we have been taking them in the water now that it is getting warmer out, maybe he has some water trapped in there???

My DD started doing at around that age too and I read in a book its because it´s the "easier action" for babies to make. Mine wouldnt necessarily do it before going to sleep but I wouldnt worry too much. It may be his way of self soothing. Does he seem bothered, i.e. putting his fingers in his ear or being off?

However, I will say that if you have a niggling doubt then I´d definitely call the pedi as us mums have a 6th sense about these things. GL!

I agree with Rachel. One of my boys loves to do that.

My son Trent always does this when he is tired. I am glad you posted this. I thought it was just him.

My DD2, Alyssa, Loves to do that. She started doing it around 7 months old. At first I was worried cause it looked like it was involuntary. I felt much better after my week-long visit at my mom's when they were 9.5 mos old. She did it while we were there and I started to worry [cause she hadn't done it in a while] and my mom said [in her broken english], "Nah, don't worry. She's just having fun! Makey dizzy herself is all ^_^". and she called it 'dodie dodie' and did it along with Alyssa.

Now, if you do it, she'll copy you and smile.. like you understand each other or something. Oh how relieved was I !!

P.S. She'll do it whenever. I've never noticed her do it when she was tired. Then again, all babies are different ;)

my DD does this too, usually when she is tired or anytime she is on the changing table. she usually is laughing when she does it, i tell her "shakey, shakey, shakey" and shake my head too and she cracks up laughing. i think it is totally normal and nothing to worry about. DS does it occasionally too.

one of my guys has discovered this, too. he tips his head back and waves it back and forth. we took the boys out shopping this weekend and he did it the whole time we were in lowes.

My DD loves to shake her head back and forth, and has done this for about 6 weeks now. My DS just started to do this too. I've never worried about it. I usually imitate them and they smile or laugh.

I figured they were already practicing saying "NO."

My kids did that too. I doubt it's anything to worry about unless they have been sick, or are waking at night all of a sudden. If so I would check out the possibility of an ear infection.

One of my sons used to do the same thing when I'd lay him down at bedtime as a self soothing technique. I think it made him feel comfy and relaxed. He grew out of it after a few months.

Tatiana does this, and has done it for a while. I was very worried at first, but my MIL reassured me that it was not an involuntary action. She does not do it when she's tired - more when she's having fun. She smiles when she does it, and now its how she dances!! I saw her once playing with a toy, and when the music came on, she started to shake her head. Since then, if we start singing or humming a tune, she now 'dances' with us and has a blast. Her sister has no idea whats going on, but she thinks its funny. Tatiana will also copy us if we do it.

One of my DD moves her head side to side like you explained when she's waking up. Looks like she's saying "No, I don't want to wake up - just give me 5 more minutes".

Both of mine went through a stage of doing that. Nothing at all was wrong. I think it's just a new novel feeling for them, so they like to do it for awhile. Silly little things that they are. :)

Mine both do that, especially when they are sleepy, but sometimes just for fun.

I have a funny story about this though: when DD first started (a few months ago) I took her to the pedi to check her ears...my regular pedi was out so I got this other guy who asked if she did it when nursing. She had a few times, so I said yes. He wrote a prescription for prevacid for reflux. What??? I told him that was crazy, she was eating and nursing fine with no signs of reflux. He said any time a baby fusses during nursing, he thinks reflux. Ugh. So after about 5 minutes convincing him that she did not have reflux, he took back the prescription and asked if I thought it might have been a seizure. Seriously?? Ugh again. I told him to check her ears so I could go home. No ear infections, just a new skill. She learned how to shake her head. Silly babies, dumb pedi. I was so happy when my regular pedi came back because she agreed with me! Now they do it sometimes when they are "dancing" to music. They bop up and down and shake their little heads when I play a favorite song
