Movie at movie theater - what age?

We had a playdate with a mom and her two sons. The 4.5 year old is in Noam's class. He has a brother in first grade.

The mom told me that they have been a few times to the movie theater to see movies with the boys.

It's still too early for us. I know that Sapir would get scared by the loud noise and darkness. Hadas is totally too young and Noam would be asking questions constantly about what was going on.

When did you first go to the movie theater with your kids?

Mine are 3 and we tried when Shrek 3 came out. It didnt go so well. Jayden sat through it, but Jesse got bored after he filled up on popcorn and candy.
I think we'll wait until next year.

I took my kids for the first time when they were 2 1/2 and they did great, within 2 months we saw 5 movies!

My girls will be 5 in December. They have never gone to a movie theater. I have no plans to take them any time soon, because I find movie theaters uncomfortably loud to my ears, so I shudder to think of their ears. My niece's son is 4 mos younger than they are and goes to movies all the time with no problems.

My middle son didn't go until he was 4 (mainly because the twins were born when he was 2 so next 2 years were a blur!). We took the twins in August to see a movie (almost 3), LuLu loved it but Puck got bored. It's pretty typical that her attention span is longer than his.

My girls sit through full-length Disney movies, so I guess they could handle it. I worry that the sound might be too loud though. Well, that and the fact that Melissa likes to give a running commentary throughout, which is cute at home but...

My oldest was 5 when he really started to enjoy the movie theater. We took him when he was probably 3 1/2 and he was scared. Now he loves it! I just think it is too expensive!!

My oldest did Shrek 3 this summer, at a little over 3 yrs old, and did great. I think it depends a lot on your kids, though, as far as how they do.

LOL, same here. My Connor ALWAYS has to tell me what hes seeing, etc. Its very cute, but in a movie theater Im sure people would be irritated. Where I used to live they had "family times" to bring small ones (like toddlers and infants)...for certain kid movies. I loved that idea, but it was always at like 11am, and there was no way I could dreag 2 (or 3) all by myslef 'hoping' they would sit.

The first one they really enjoyed was Shrek at 13 months but we took them from the time they were born

My boys started going to the movies when they were 2 1/2. They have gone to about a half a dozen or so movies. They have always sat still through the entire movie and rarely talk during the movie.

Our local theater had free family movies this summer on specific days. It so happened I had one of those days off, so, we went and saw wallace and gromit attach of the warerabbit. They actually did pretty well. About 10 min or so before the end and Vince was asking to go. this ws the only time so far.

    Great feedback everyone, thanks!

When Hadas gets old enough I'll try taking them to the movies.

I agree with pp who said that sometimes the volume is even too loud for me....

I think that Noam would probably like it a lot if there was a good kids movie to go to.

    Thanks again for your posts

This past summer our local theater had kids movies at matinee prices. We took the kids to three of them and they did great. We never stayed until the end of a show, but they did enjoy it.

I haven't taken them yet, but was considering maybe for their taking them to the bee movie with Jerry Seinfeld. If not, I'll probably wait until they are 4.
