I think I officially get the title after yesterday. I was strapping Jackson into his car seat and Lucas was next to me. He said 'bye mommy' and I said 'bye Lucas' and then he ran down the drive way into the street. Normally when he says that he will follow me or stay close by,so I wasn't paying attention. When I turned around he was down our street and onto the next. For a non-runner I moved pretty fast!

I guess I have to make sure I am always holding his hand and not give him the opportunity to run off. Of course he thought the whole thing was funny and a great new game. Grrrrrrr!!!!!!

Oh No! Glad you caught him. Anytime mine say goodbye I know they are usually up to something. ^_^ They either want me to leave so they can do something they are not suppose to -or- it means they are fixing to take off. Bye saying "bye", I guess gives them the OK to do it (in their eyes). At least, that is what my two seem to think.

Eeeeek! You must have had a heart attack!

A couple times, Andrew has run away from me in public, deliberately, with a big evil grin on his face. Those are the only times I have used physical discipline. I gave him a really hard hand smack (swat on the bottom only made him laugh harder), and the second time I had to do it was the last time it ever happened. I'm not happy about it, but it was the only way to get through to him, and running off is a safety issue.

    Yikes!!

That's like the time I was packing to go away for the weekend. The twins were almost 2 1/2 and were playing in what I thought was a locked screen porch. I was in the house and the doorbell rang. My neighbor's daughter said "I think these two belong to you..." They had followed a ball down the street

LOL that's too funny. Amelia did the same thing to me one time, only she didn't say bye first.

Goodbye is never a word I want to hear outside, especially with my son, because that is usually when he decides to do something he is not supposed to. I would have had a heart attack! Maura!

Thank you all for the kind responses! It is nice to know that I am not the only one dealing w/ this issues! After Lucas's great escape I bought the book 123 Magic. Hopefully that will help. That and super gluing his hand to mine ;)

Woah! How scary!! So glad he's okay. I have one who tries to dart off a lot. I end up digging him out of the backseat of our minivan on a regular basis (he hides from me while I'm strapping his brother in), but it's better than having him run off, which he would surely do.

We kind of nipped this behavior before it even had a chance to start. From the time the girls could walk, we would always make them 'Touch the tire' of the truck. Whoever was NOT currently being strapped in, or had already been taken out, has to do that. Now that their younger brother is walking, we do the same with him.

They actually think it's a pretty cool game, to see how still they can stand while touching the truck. It's pretty hilarious too, that the girls (all of 2.5 when their brother started walking) would tell him, "Bennett, touch the tire, NOW!" LOL Poor thing they are always trying to boss him around.

But give that a try. It keeps them where we need them until everyone is safely out of the vehicle and we can move up to the sidewalk.
