So we're having issues with fear of monsters. Aiden's been waking & crying, always telling us he's afraid of monsters. Conner told him the monsters only come after he falls asleep (greaaaat, as if that helped!), so now he always says he doesn't want to fall asleep. Oy.

Anyways, I told him I was going to go buy Monster Spray today. I read on here about getting a spray bottle to spray to keep monsters away. I'm just going to get a squirt bottle & use a sharpie to write Monster Spray on it with a picture of a monster with a line through it. But, do I just put plain water in the bottle? If I put glitter or something in it, will it clog it?

What does YOUR Monster Spray consist of???

I would put some perfume in it (so it smells like Monster Spray because you know they don't like good smelling things), but no food coloring or glitter.

I'm the original Monster Spray mom! It worked wonders in my house a year ago when the fear of monsters (and alligators, and dinosaurs, and coyotes) came up. I used a simple spray bottle with plain water and walked around with the girls spraying doors and wherever else they wanted.

I didn't use glitter or color or anything - not because you can't, but since the plain water worked for me that's all I needed. I didn't even draw a picture of a monster on the bottle or anything either. I guess my kids are especially gullible. =)

Oh - and since I sprayed once, I confidently tell my girls that we don't need to spray again. They'll act scared of something every few months, but I remind them that we've already sprayed for alligators or whatever it is.

If the spray doesn't work, I have a friend who bought a "monster watcher" or something like that - a special stuffed animal with big round eyes who stays up at night to make sure no monsters can come in (because, you know, if someone's awake, monsters can't come into your house). Her son reminds the monster watcher every night before bed to stay awake, and then can sleep soundly knowing he's protected.

Monster Watcher, how cute is that!

I joked to my husband that I should dump some Febreeze into the 'Monster Spray' bottle...that way our house will get refreshed while keeping monsters away ;)! Maybe I'll do a little half & half.

Thanks, ladies! Let's hope tonight goes better than last night! He was up crying at 5:30 because of monsters & no one got back to sleep. Crazy, too, since we have no scary monster books, nor have they ever seen anything scary Monster like on tv. Well, except Monsters, Inc, but that was SO many months ago (although, they do have good memories). I wonder if the other daycare kids have gotten him going on it...thankfully it's just Aiden. Conner will talk about it, but doesn't seem afraid. In fact, he seems quite content thinking that they're waiting til after he falls asleep to come out....silly boy.

    Febreeze!
Might as well freshen as you chase those monsters away.

Okay, this is going the other way - but I heard to avoid the use of Monster Spray because you are validating that monsters exist. Just a thought...

I was so into the idea and had it all ready to go, until someone brought this up to me so I went about it differently.

My boys are 23 months, so I'll soon be visiting this board more often. But I wanted to say I love the idea of the monster spray. It's easy to get and you can make a project out of it. They can decorate the bottles as they like, you just supply the water or if you want the scent something else, maybe mixed with water. I like lavender or chamomile. Both scent help relax and help you sleep. What a great idea!!! So far neither of my boys appear to be afraid of anything specific, they may be too young, but if the time comes, I may try this!

I have heard of lavender as it relaxes and if htey can smell it then they know it is working.f I also like the idea of the stuffed animal.

I tried ignoring the Monster question too, but my girls were still convinced, so I decided the spray was easier than trying to change the minds of two toddlers.

We, too, did the whole "There are no monsters" talk, but after a week or so of that NOT working, we went with Monster Spray. What a difference! NO night wakings & crying out! WOOHOO! We've let them spray about every other day. We also took the advice of the Monster Watcher, so now their Buzz Lightyears stay awake all night to make sure the Monster Spray works :).

It's worked for us, although we still reiterate that there are no monsters in the house. It's an additional safety thing for them, I guess.

I'm so glad to hear this has worked for people. I'm going to try this today before nap time. I don't have any lavender or anything like that, so I think I'll try a little vanilla in the water. I'm also not going to call it Monster Spray because she's never said it's monsters she's scared of and I don't want to plant that idea in her head. I think I'll just say that the spray gets rid of anything scary since "scared" is the word she's been using. Let's hope this works because I'm all out of other ideas.

I didn't work. :( I don't know what I'm going to do with this kid. Nothing is convincing her it is safe to sleep in her bed.
