Mono/Mono or Mono/Di Twins?

Hello, all. I'm new here, and have been reading a post here and there. Will try and just give you a short story here...my wife and I have been having trouble with IF, and have been pregnant 2, lost those two pregnancies around the 6 week mark. We've done clomid, up'ed the dose on clomid, had 2 IUI's, and are now pregnant for the 3rd time. Well, we confirmed today that we in fact DO have twins. The question is if they are mono/mono or mono/di. We know they are one or the other. The sonographer just said she couldn't separate the two to determine this. My wife is only hitting 7 weeks today, and I've read that 8 weeks is typically when they can distinguish between the two.

The issue we are seeing though, is "baby b's" heartbeat was really low today at 69 (first time we heard a heartbeat on baby b). Baby b was measuring somewhere around 6 weeks 1 day too. Baby A is doing fine, at 132 bpm and measuring at 6w4d. Has anyone else been in a situation like this. Our doctor, who is GREAT, laid everything out there for us today. Said she had seen situations like this where the baby bounces back and heart rate goes up and things are fine. But we get the feeling right now that things aren't great. We know all the risks associated with both, but I"m just wondering has anyone else's situation matches ours or is similar??

Looking forward to learning more about you all here!

congrats on your pregnancy but i'm sorry it's so stressful so soon. i don't personally have experience with this but i do have mono/di twins on the way. i'm about 18 weeks pregnant and at 9 weeks we heard both heartbeats strong around 180bpm, they are now around 150bpm. i hope everything turns around and the baby bounces back quickly. keep your head up and fingers crossed!

Thanks, haleystar! I'm sitting here now searching for information on low/high heart rates, and can't find anything. I can find one that was 150 and one was 130, but not 132/69! I've already deemed "baby B" my fighter....she's gonna pull through!

Thanks for the encouragement and good luck with your twins!

oh i wouldn't research too much on the internet. it can be more tramatizing then helpful. most of the time it just scares you more than you already are. best thing i would suggest is to just keep being hopeful and get in contact with your OB.

one thing you may try, this worked for me until about 16 weeks, was to listen for the heartbeats with a stethescope. we have one on hand because my husband is a fire fighter/emt. it takes a bit to find the heartbeats but if you poke around a bit you may pick them up. that would at least assure you that they are still beating and might give you some peace of mind.

STAY OFF THE INTERNET!!!! Ok, now that I have that said, try not to worry. The beginning, and, well, the middle, and the end, for that matter of a twin pregnancy can be a roller coaster ride! We've all been there. The best thing you and your wife can do at this point is to make sure you have the best medical team possible and relax. They get paid to worry about everything else. We had mono/di girls last December who were originally diagnosed as mono/mono, but then we saw the membrane at around 12 weeks. mono/mono twins=another thing NOT to look up on the internet. If you do end up with momos, come here for advice.

Wishing you two a safe and healthy twin delivery. Twins are the best! :itwins:

Congratulations on your twins!! :) I agree with everyone else about staying off the internet for info. It will only scare you! No one posts success stories, but they do here!! It's really early to dx mo/mo twins because the membrane can take several weeks for it to become visible. They thought my boys were mo/mo at first, but we did find the sep membrane at around 8 weeks. I don't have any experience with the low heartrate, but I'm wishing you and your wife well and your little fighters, too! Keep us posted!

Agree with previous posters - they couldn't see the membrane on our girls until the first trimester screen at 14/15 weeks. It's really thin and it took 2 techs and the doctor to find it. My OB thought they were mono/di at 8 weeks but we had to wait to find out conclusively then.

The best thing you can do right now is try to hang in there and try to remain calm (the hardest thing ever!); we had a couple of blips during this pregnancy and the docs after checking things out told us not to worry because they werent' worrying yet. That's their job to give the best care - they have to give you all the possibilities but just follow their advice.

    Good luck & congrats!

I too was told I had mono/mono twins at my first ultrasound, heartrates werent low tho sorry, I dont know much about that. But when I went to the specialist, at 11 weeks, they saw the membrane right away (more sensitive ultra sound), so that was a relief.
At this point all you and your wife can do is be positive, stay calm, and see a specialist as soon as you can. I would imagine your dr is sending you to one?
Good luck to you, and hang in there, babies are stronger then we think!

Just thought I'd pop in too... It is a little early to be positive that they are mono/mono. I had mono/mono girls last year. I had a wonderful doctor who was very supportive and kept a very close watch on them. I think there was a forum once on here where people posted success stories. If you DO have mono/mono twins, there is a wonderful website monoamniotic.org which is very very supportive. Reading other things on the internet can be very scary, so as others have suggested, stay away from that! Good luck!

Thanks for all the replies...I didn't realize so many had posted. I know about the internet being "bad" and only seeing the worst case scenarios, but I wanna know what I'm up against, ya know? I know it is still a bit early to determine the membrane. We go back next Wednesday and that would put us at the 8 week mark. Hope we can see it then, but to tell the truth, I'm not worried about the membrane right now, I just want to see that heartbeat up!

    Thanks for all the encouragement!

I delivered Mo-Mo girls almost 3 years ago! They were born 2 months early and it was a stressful pregnancy with a 6 week in-patient 24/7 monitoring stay but well worth it.

I hope you find that membrane!
