Found out today for sure that the babies are Mono/Di twins. The doctor is concerned because Baby B is measuring a week behind Baby A. He wants me in for a high resolution ultrasound as soon as possible. Does anyone have any experience with Mono/Di twins that had measurement discrepancy early in pregnancy?

Not exactly on point, since I'm pretty sure my MZ twins were di-di. But they always measured apart, from when we first discovered Baby B at 19 weeks. Born 1 lb apart at 39 weeks. Baby B will always be smaller, and at 2 years is now about 2 lbs lighter and a 1/2 inch shorter than her sister. But perfectly healthy.

Just wanted to share this so that you know weight and size discrepancies can happen in otherwise uncomplicated MZ pregnancies. Definitely something to keep on top of, but not necessarily a problem.

    Good luck!

It's good your doc is being proactive. It is probably nothing but he needs to be careful becasue of the risk of twin to twin transfusion syndrome (which I had.)

my mono/di girls always measured different as well - Danika (my baby B) has always been bigger & still is to this day. i agree that it could be nothing, but it's a good idea to have the extra monitoring, just in case it is something. let us know how the u/s goes.

My mono/di babies (now 23 weeks) started off with a large discrepancy so the point the Dr. told me the smaller one likely wouldn't make it. At my 6 week u/s Twin B's sac was 1/3 the size of Twin A and he was about 5 days behind in growth. At 7 weeks the discrepancy was worse. By some miracle, by 9 weeks he caught up and was only a day behind Twin A!! I did introduce Ensure drinks at about 7 weeks so this might have helped?? Since then Twin B has always been a little smaller than A but not a discrepancy my Dr. is worried about. Are you having much protein or drinking the Ensure??

I dont mean to hijack your thread, but can someone explain the different and abbreviations for di/di and or mono/di?

Mono/di is monochorionic (one placenta) diamniotic (2 sacs. ) di/di is dichorionic (2 placentas)diamniotic (2 sacs.) There is also momo twins which is monochorionic (one placenta) monoamniotic (one sac) That is the riskiest of the three.

Angel.. I'm not getting enough protein. I KNOW I'm not. I have a major aversion to MOST meat this pregnancy. I'm trying to get protein in other ways but I doubt it's enough. I really need to invest in some Ensure or something.

Momoffour.... Here's the break down as I understand it..

Dichorionic/Diamniotic (DiDi)-- 2 placentas, 2 amniotic sacs (can be identical or fraternal)

Monochorionic/DiAmniotic (MonoDi)-- 1 placenta, 2 sacs (identical twins.. 70-80% of identical twins are this type)

Monochorionic/DiAmniotic (MonoMono or MoMo0)-- 1 placenta, 1 Sac (identical twins.. very rare)

Hope that helps.. Congrats on your twins :)

For my boys they noticed a difference at my 10 week U/S. Baby B was 3 days behind his brother, and as the pregnancy progrossed the gap widened. That may not be the case for you though

My mono/di twins have always had a slight difference in size but I've been told by my doctor and the US techs that this is typical. The difference hasn't been major, it was 3 days apart at my first ultrasound. Since then they haven't really measured them in days, or at least haven't shared that info with me. I think it's good they are keeping an eye on it and the high res ultrasound is a good thing. You'll be able to see your babies and so much clearer. It's fun to see how much they move around and what they look like. I'm sure everything will be fine - try not to worry.

My twins were 3 days apart early in the pregnancy. By 22 weeks, my smaller twin was in the 18th percentile and I went on bedrest, drank ensures. My twin A was always around the 50th percentile. They thought I would have to deliver very early as my twin b was so small and blood flow was sub-optimal. They delivered me at 34 weeks when twin b went below the 10th percentile...they were 3lb5oz and 4lb8oz. At 3.5 months actual age, they are doing awesome...my tiny little nugget is now about 11 1/2 lbs and his big bro is closing in on 14lbs!

A week apart could mean nothing- just cause twins are ID doesn't mean they will always be the same size in utero- placenta sharing, cord location, etc. really can cause differences in weights. The big worry is TTTS- but size diff alone doesn't mean TTTS..as long as fluid is good, growth is consistent and the babies are above the 10th percentile, you are in pretty good shape!
