Mono-di to di-di

I was wondering how many of you have been told you were carrying mono/di twins only to find out after delivery that it was two placenta's fused together (di/di).

Has anyone been changed PRIOR to delivery?

At our last O.B. appt. the doctor that came in said that I had failed my 1-hr Glucose test and asked if I had ever with previous pregnancies. I have always struggled with Low Blood Sugar so I was SHOCKED that I had failed and told her no, I was actually surprised that I had failed this one. Anyway, she went on to say "Well, with two placentas blah, blah, blah." I went, "wait a minute, we have been told we are carrying mono/di twins which is ONE placenta, do you mean just b/c there are two babies?" She says, "no, I see in your chart from the last U/S they have you labeled di/di but I do see in all previous it is mono/di" I was VERY confused to say the least.

We are going to ask the tech and Dr. Roth (the specialist) at our next visit (May 21) b/c we are curious to know if they saw something that indicated two placenta's that they had missed all along or if someone was sleeping when writing the last report.

So, just curious what others experience has been with this. When I see di-di ultrasounds the two circles are very distinct it seems but maybe not all di-di are like that. My ultrasounds from very early on showed one big circle w/two faint sacs around each baby.

I think the doctor should take a better look at you b/c your ultrasound pics look just like mine did and my boys are mono/di and very ID! I would just ask what the heck is goin on at your next appointment. IMO, I think someone made a mistake. :)

I agree...they look 100% mono-di. My sister has di-di, and they look completely different, two sacs, totally separated.
I would call and clear things up with the doctors office.

Some ultrasound techs are stupid. I have mono di twins and my ultrasounds look just like yours. But I have had 2 or 3 different techs say both placentas look great when doing my ultrasounds. I tried to question one and he got all confused so I was like screw it and have just ignored all the stupid ones I get since. Thank goodness real doctors go over their results and I don't rely on them to know my babies are ok.

I agree with everyone else- they look just like my u/s and my boys were mono/di (I've seen the pathology report that confirms just one placenta.) My sister's girls were di/di and early u/s look VERY different- there is a lot of space in between babies. I think someone documented di/di on your chart by mistake, but I would definitely follow up. Good luck!

I was told mo/di during pregnancy..and my boys are fraternal. We're 100% because they have different blood types. We didn't find out about twins until 22 weeks. SO I went from 22 weeks to delivery at 37.5 weeks believing they were identical. Even the peri had a hard time finding the dividing membrane. At delivery, the OB confirmed that it was one placenta. Then the pathology report came back di/di. A blood test confirmed that they have different blood types.

    So yes, it can happen.

I can see how at 22 weeks, when the babies are larger, it's harder to differentiate mono di from di di. I think it's easier to tell if you find out early. Glad you were able to clear things up with a simple blood test.

Those are mono di. I think I would switch doctors. You're high risk and need to be monitored more often cuz of the shared placenta.

    Good luck and congrats!

I was a late twin diagnosis as well. 19 weeks. I was told mono-di and we were closely monitored for TTTS due to fluid differences. At birth, the placenta was examined and it was 2 fused. From 19-33 weeks all u/s techs, leading TTTS peri, several other peris and my ob believed they were mono-di. We had them DNA tested (b/c same blood type) and they are ID.

OK--I just want to thank you all for clearing up for me WHAT mono/di and di/di actually means
I'm early on and have only had one u/s and she said she thought the placentas were fused, but there could just be one. Now if that doesn't get more distinct, they will probably keep me at a high risk for mono/di, right?!?!?!?!?!
Wish I could've helped on looking at the pics, but mine looks similar and we see 2 distinct sacs with a definite membrane separating them, but......I guess time will tell....

I just asked my tech last u/s what the chances of the placenta actually being two fused instead of one like we've always thought. She showed me where the membrane attaches to the placenta and said if it were two there would be something called a "t-sign". On a mono-di like ours it's one single line leading from it but with two fused it would have a small widow's peak type thing leading to the membrane.

Hello ladies.. Hope its ok I join in.. I am newly pregnant. Will be 10 weeks on Friday... We did fertility treatments and got pregnant on the first try...So from the first sign we were intially told identical twins. Then they thought mo/mo but seen the sacs that were around each. The tech said they then shared a placenta, doc agreed. With the OB today, he said they had 2 placentas based on 2 yolk sacs..But he said the Peri would scan more throughly and we would go from there. I wouldnt be disappointed either way.. But I just wanna know...

To the OP, I had di/di b/g twins and there were two distinct separate dark pathces with a baby in each, not one black patch with two babies in like yours. I would def say you have mono/di.

Sometimes they are just a bit daft. I had a fill in Dr see me once and listened on a doppler for a heartbeat. There's the heartbeat, he said. I said'what about the other one?' he said 'that's your heart beat'. "what about the other baby?' I said.........OH, he said - you are having twins?
I told him yes AND COULD HE KINDLY CHECK FOR MY OTHER BABY'S HEART BEAT. lol. And they get paid!
    Dumb.

Yeah, this was at my peri's office. We have been monitored for mono/di all along. That is why I was confused when this doctor said last report said di/di. (The peri's practice is also a "teaching" practice with many med students/residents) I am pretty sure someone was just "sleeping at the wheel" when they did the report because all previous ones have stated mono/di and the peri stated mono/di when he did our original scan. I will question them more at my next appointment but certainly believe what I have all along, they are mono/di.

Yeah, I think with placenta's, the earlier diagnosis is better to go with. Sometimes later on two will fuse...but sounds like yours were always fused. That sad you can have Di/Di identical twins, too...we did! So I think it is important if they suspect that it was mono at any point they keep and eye on things from the TTTS persepctive but other than that I would say it doesn't really make a whole lot of difference.
Maybe next ultrasound just tell them it is mono/di!
