Hi, DH and I just found out we are having twins. I am almost 13 weeks along. I've been reading these forums soaking up info like a sponge, but one thing that confuses me is that some people's signature blocks say that they are having "mono/di boys!"...I thought that mono meant identical and di meant fraternal...so how can your twins be identical/fraternal??? Or am I missing something here?

    Thanks in advance!

Smiles. i am having mono/di boys. Mono meaning they are sharing one placenta instead of each having thier own, and di meaning they are each in thier own amniotic sacs inside the placenta they share. And yes, they are identical. Mo/mo twins share both the same placenta and only one sac and are also ID.

Congratulations!!! Scan in a ultasound pic and we can help you out!! One black hole means mono chorionic (placenta) di= 2 chorion (separating membrane). mono-di.

the first word refers to the placenta (chorion), the second to the amniotic sac.

monochorionic/monoamniotic (mono/mono) = one placenta, one sac (rare)
    monochorionic/diamniotic (mono/di) = one placenta, two sacs
    dichorionic/diamniotic (di/di) = two placentas, two sacs

Fraternal twins are always di/di. Identicals can be in any of these categories; it depends on when the egg splits.

    Perfect and simple explination!
