another question for your ladies... it's my worry day today.
Nefeli has a large mongoloid spot. when she was born it was like she was wearing blue shorts. as she is growing the spot is lighter colour but it has spread up on her back. now it isn't solid but looks like it's spliting as the skin stretches. i joke and say she's like a cat. the pt asked me about it and if it's something anyone said is related to anything else. now every pedi who has seen it has said it's normal.
is there any reason for me to think different? should I worry? should a specialist dr look at it?

Do you mean Mongolian spot? I just did a quick search and everything I found says that there is no treatment necessary for Mongolian spots. They are just benign markings that require no treatment and they generally fade or completely dissapear by the time the child reaches 4 years old.

Judging by that I would say there is no reason to have it checked out any more so long as your Pedi has seen it and says it looks normal.

If you are talking about mongolian spots they are harmless but something you do want to have documented by the ped. They are very common with darker skinned races. My bio father is hispanic and even though I was very light I had them really, really dark. Mine were there until I was around 10. My kids have them as well, Stephens are starting to fade but the girls are still there and pretty dark. The reason to have them documented is becasue they normally look like bruising. My great-aunt and uncle had refused to give me back to my mom because they thought she had beaten me until my grandma explained what they were.

My oldest son has one on his leg. His dad is black and I am white. The pedi said that it would fade but it really hasn't it has just streched with his skin. The are supposed to disappear with age but sometimes they don't. there is nothing really to worry about with them, just another type of birthmark. they are common in hispanics, african americans, native americans, and another race but I can't remember which one. I think that my pedi told me just to check on it every once in a while to make sure that it still looks the same or fading. It it starts to look weirder ( ) than it already does let your pedi know. Mine checks it at every check up and my son is 8 and still says it looks normal. His spot goes along with his 5 other cafe a late birthmarks. I call him my polka dot child. :)

They will keep changing shape until they disappear or they will become much lighter. All of my children have them! My 8 year old still has his but its very light now.

thank you all for your posts :)
Erykah I'm glad you mentioned it will keep changing shape. That's what was strangest and I don't remember any books mentioning it.

My DD1's disappeared around age 10.It was always quite dark and seemed to change color over time.
BTW, if it's near her bottom, you may want your pedi to document it. DD had it on her lower back and bum-- right around where you'd expect it if I was beating her! My daycare provider questioned me suspiciously -- then was so relieved when I explained what it was! Anyway, it's a good idea to have it on record for this reason.
My twins don't have any which is interesting to me.
