Ok, for moms with boy/girl twins, how many times do people ask you if they are identical even AFTER you have told them they are a boy and a girl? I am so surprised how many people ask me this, well educated people, who still ask if my boy/girl twins are identical.......does anyone else get this question?

I get that alot!!! I love it when people then ask: "Are you sure? They look alike." Um, they really don't and since they are b/g that makes them fraternal...

I used to get that question all the time. If you get asked, just tell them "Yep, from the waist up!" ;)

All the time when they were younger (not so much now since they really look nothing alike). Even at the Dr's office I'd have the medical assistants and nurses ask me! Sometimes I think it's actually not stupidity, they just speak before they think.

Crazy! I have gotten that question several times and I always say "ummmm there is at least one difference!"
    (plus they look nothing alike!)
I kid you not-at one of my OB appt. when I was pregant one of the nurses asked what I was having and I said b/g and then she asked if they were identical! WHAT?!?! You are a freaking nurse! For an OBGYN! OMG you need to go back to school!

I hate to break it to you ladies, but I am 31 years old and people STILL ask if my brother and I are identical.

I saw somewhere, I'll try and find it. That there's this new study of b/g twins actually being tested as identical. Not being the same gender, but same DNA. This is very rare I guess, I'll try and find it.

lol, when I was pregnant I would go shopping and obviously be buying boy and girl clothes. People would say do you know what your having. I would say I'm actually having twins a boy and a girl. "Oh, are they identical?!"
Now if I take them out and they are obviously dressed as a boy and a girl I still get the are they identical question. Sometimes you can see the look on peoples faces after they ask thats like "doh!" but some people are just clueless!

I get it all the time and I usually say 'No, one has boy bits and one has girl bits.'
A husband and wife that my Partner knows came and spoke to us in the supermarket once and the H asked if they were identical, the wife said 'No, they are b/g silly' and he said 'Well they might look a lot alike'. LOL Had to laugh because if he just thought identical meant that they look alike........all he would have to do is have a look. They were right in front of him.

I saw the post topic and was like, "What!? Somebody on here thinks their boy/girl can be identical?! No way!" You got me and made me laugh!

Oh that drives me crazy. Even better is when they say "oh you're so lucky, wow, a boy and a girl!" (they come out with this on their own), and then follow is up with "are they identical?" . Umm, yeah, sure why not.

    not so much anymore.

I used to when they were little and loked more alike. I actually had a NURSE ask me this. I said, "no, he has a penis" (pointing to ds) and she turned bright red and continued to apologize for the longest time. SHe said she didn't even think about the question, it just came out. Like it's something interesting about twins and didn't think past that. I think that is why some ask and others are just ignorant to the biological facts.

:nea: i have heard it's possible---watched in the womb multiples---but it's extremely rare and something is chromosomally wrong...some people just don't think

Yes! And we haven't even taken them out in public much yet. Sometimes after I tell them no, they'll ask if I'm sure because they look so much alike. Oh, I must be wrong, then.

The really crazy thing is when nurses ask me if they're fraternal. If you are a pediatric or OB/GYN nurse, you shouldn't have to ask that!!

ALL THE TIME. One lady even argued with me and said they look identical. While mine do look like brother and sister they are by no means identical. I think people just here twins and say the word and just assume all twins are identical.

People ask me this all the time too. I think it goes along with the "oh are they twins' question. People want to ask about the twins and I guess that it the way to break the ice. I just say "no" and leave it at that.

This is another question (along with "are they twins" etc.) that doesn't bother me... NOPE. Mine are fraternal. If you want to stand there long enough I'll tell you why... Lol! Seriously, most people just want to see and love my babies. That's ok with me as long as we don't touch right now (being RSV season and all...). It really doesn't bother me when people pay attention to them.

I used too when they were little. Now people ask me if they are really twins. They look like they could be months apart. DS is much bigger than DD.

My kids are four and it still happens. Recently someone asked how old they were and when I told her, she looked confused, so I said "they're twins" and she responded with "Really? They look so different from each other" Of course, she followed that with "Are they identical?" :rotflmbo:

I'm popping in from Expecting and just had to respond to this. I was in L&D last week due to contractions and the nurse (who was overall great) actually asked AFTER my DH had told her they were b/g if the babies were in the same sac or seperate. I'm assuming this was her way of asking if they were identical?? But seriously?? A L&D didn't realize they can't be in the same freakin sac if they're b/g. There's no possible scenario for this. Some people.... I guess I have this to look forward to huh? ;)

I have gotten this question too. I think people are just trying to make conversation, even though it doesn't really make sense. ID b/g twins are very rare!

I'm totally going to say this next time someone asks if my b/g twins are identical. my typical response - i laugh. it's kind of a knee jerk response because i can't understand how people can be so dumb. it's like asking if me and my hubby are identical - uh...pretty sure we aren't.

I used to think people that asked that were plain silly.

But after I saw the show on cable about multiples in the womb, I learned that B/G twins CAN be identical. It is rare, but possible.

    http://www.twinsmagazine.com/facts.html
Are all same-sex twins (boy/boy or girl/girl) identical (monozygotic)?
No, definitely not. This is tricky—onozygotic/identical twins are nearly always the same sex either boy/boy or girl/girl. Until very recently, in fact, experts thought monozygotic/identical twins had to be same-sex. But now we know that there are certain rare instances* when monozygotic/identical twins can actually be different-sex individuals; when this has occurred and been documented, the twins are genetically identical in every way other than a slight chromosomal difference.

So now that I know better I don't answer with a snippy reply.

Here's a funny for ya. I was visting my friend this summer and her MIL came over to see my girls. She mentions she's a twin, so I ask if she is frat or ID. I KID YOU NOT, she said "my brother and I are identical". :umm: What? I had to make her repeat it to make sure I heard her right.
