Hi - I am new to this board and in need of some advice. I was diagnosed yesterday by a top radioligist with momo twins (share a placenta and a amniontic sac) at 7 weeks 2 days pregnant. I know this is very early for this type of diagnosis but our radioligist says that he is 100% sure. We were using a high resolution ultrasound. He did see the membrane circling around both babies but not the deviding membrane. Everything I have read says that 7 weeks is too early for this type of diagnosis but I have found nothing about the fact that he was able to see the membrane around the babies and not dividing them which has me very worried as it seems if you can see the one around them shouldn't you be able to see the dividing membrane as well. If anyone has any advice or had a similar situation I would greatly appreciate your response.

While I believe this man COULD potentially be correct this early.. I DO find it HIGHLY irresponsible for ANYONE to diagnose someone THAT EARLY with MOMO twins. It's just plain irresponsible! Even IF he had his suspicions-- he should know better than to worry you THIS SOON!! EEEEKS!

Ugh. My RE dx me with momo twins at 7 weeks also.. then I found out that if you see TWO YOLK SACS you are almost certain to have a dividing membrane!!

Did you see one or two yolk sacs?? This is a pertinent detail here.

If you saw one-- you can start to worry.. but don't panic! MANY people do just fine w/ MOMO twins and they are on this site. You will be monitored VERY carefully and be in the hospital at 26 weeks for daily NST's.

You and the babies will be just fine. Just get a GREAT Perinatologist even if they are not momo-- the fact that they are identical requires high monitoring in and of itself.

Thank you for your advice. We did see two yolk sacs at my 6 week US - but the Dr said this means there is a 95% chance of two amnions and we just happen to be in the 5%. When your Dr told you at 7 weeks that your twins were momo's did he/she see any membrane around the babies? I guess I worry that he was able to see the membrane around the babies but not the dividing membrane. I worry that if you can see the membrane around the babies then you should be able to see the deviding membrane as well. Thank you for any advice.

Absolutely NOTHING to do w/ seeing the outside membrane!! The outer membrane is THICK the membrane that divides the babies that I had was LITERALLY not visible to 90% of the u/s techs I had and I had high res level 2 ultrasounds!! They'd ALWAYS have to call in ANOTHER tech to "help them find it" so NO... to answer your question-- being able to see the outer is irrelevant from all that I know.

That two yolk thing is CRUCIAL.

Just hold onto hope here. Either way, it is going to be okay BUT I'm still thinking you're going to have mono-di twins there. Seriously.

At 13 weeks, we saw my membrane so it's a ways off now.. And keep in mind what I said--- even at my level 2's we sometimes took an hour or more to find my membrane!!! Seriously!!!

Thank you again for your advice - I have been needing to hear a little hope from someone. We have been using a level 3 Ultrasound so I don't know how much more likley we are to find out the correct information this early with this machine. It is so hard when you have a 'top' Dr tell you that he is correct and there is no hope for this to change.

I have been to the monoamniotic.org site for some time now - wonderful site - but they must be having some problems as I cannot register - I contine to get an error message.

    Thank you again.

    Hi there,

I've got almost 1 year old mono twins. I was given a diagnosis like you that there was no hope of finding a membrane but I only had 1 yolk sac.

Even if you are mono there are many many successful stories. As others have said two yolk sacs are very important. Doctors are wrong at times and membranes can be very hard to see. I think a good way of looking a it is the membrane is like plastic wrap in water. You shouldn't give up hope of finding one. There are windows of opportunity where the membrane can be seen better - 10 - 12 weeks and 16 - 20 weeks.

Feel free to PM me if there's anything I can do to help

Thank you for your response. How many weeks were you when they diagnosed you? How long were you able to carry your babies and when did you go on bedrest at the hospital? Sorry for all of the questions - I just have a lot!! Thank You again!!

They also suspected me with momo twins, but I had 2 yolk sacs and they were finally able to find the membrane at around 8 weeks. The dividing membrane is VERY hard to find- even on a level 2 u/s- it always took them FOREVER to find it! Either way, there are great success stories if you end up with a momo diagnosis. I agree though with ivfbound, though- it's way too early for this radiologist to give you a "100%" diagnosis of momo twins... Good luck and keep us posted!

They couldn't find out dividing membrane until 16 weeks! They couldn't see it at 8 or 12 weeks. We did have two yolk sacs!

They can still find it, and I personally agree with PP's - it's a little early for a difinitive diagnosis such as this. We were given level 2 u/s every time, and no sign of the membrane. Even at 16 weeks, we saw it for a split second.

Please try to relax - maybe they'll see it at 12 weeks! I was scared after that too, because we didn't see if then either - but we did see it later!

I have 2 year old MoMO girls - I didn't find out I was pregnant with twins till 22 weeks - a week later I found out MoMo and 3 weeks later when in for my 24/7 monitoring.

    I delivered at 32 weeks -

You are still early and a membrane can be find - if not, try not to worry - there are success storys out there. My babies are living proof!!! Please feel free to email me with questions.

    Where are you from?

What kind of membrane are you guys talking about. I will post pics of my u/s at 12 weeks tomorrow or tonite, but my sacs are touching with a membrane in the middle deviding the sacs. The babies are pretty far apart and then it looks like fused placentas to my dr. but she isnt sure. what does this mean possibly? Either fraternal or identical?

It means, most likely, fraternal.. it sounds to me like they are in SEPARATE sacs (because you mentioned they're far apart) so probably frat but as many can tell you-- if they are same sex-- could be id too!!
