My boys have really been into playing at the sink in the morning. They play with their dirty breakfast dishes and usually play nicely together for a good 30 minutes or so. Then... they start dumping water on the floor. I warn them one time and tell them that the next time they do it, they will have to get down from the sink and go to T.O., and that will be the end of sink play for the day. Well, today, Jacob dumped water. I started to tell him not to do it, and he said "okay, Mommy." I started to elaborate, and he said "Okaaaayaaay, Mommmyyyyyyyy!!" in an annoyed tone. I ignored it and proceeded to finish my very little lecture: "if you do this again, you are going to have to go to.." and then he said "Quiet, Mommy! Be QUIET." I couldn't believe it! We NEVER say that to each other or to them (unless I'm asking them to be quiet when I am getting one up from a nap when the other is still sleeping, or if I am making a phone call... but never in a "shut your mouth" kind of way). I just told him that it's never okay to tell Mommy to be quiet like that, and he seemed genuinely surprised and accepting. But, jeez! So much attitude at such a little age!!

Oh snap! I find it hard not to laugh at the attitude, but I definitely don't want to encourage it- but since we are online and Jacob can't hear or see me:

My girls are pulling major 'tude too, and I give a warning about not speaking to us like that. So far a warning is all they've needed, but if they continued with the sassy-talk, it would be a time out. (so mommy can go in the other room and roll her eyes and laugh quietly).

They learn it from TV, your friends/relatives, other kids, overheard strangers when you're out in public, you name it... Sometimes I scratch my head over something the kids say wondering where it came from and other times, I get annoyed at the person who taught them something obnoxious.

My personal plight is to eradicate, "Shut up and eat your garbage." Thanks Disney!

What is that from? "Shut up" is not acceptable around here and if the girls said that I would be very unhappy.

It is suprising how early they start with the attitude. DD is starting to roll her eyes at us. Apparently, I do it often without even realizing it. OOPS!

I never realized how much I say (or rather, mutter under my breath), "You have GOT to be kidding me?!" until I started hearing the girls say it. Oops!!!

The dog pooped in the house today and of course Alice stepped in it and I muttered the F word. Well, Alice IMMEDIATELY said it right after me. Which makes me look like supermom in front of my own mom.

Ratatouille. And no, I didn't let them watch it (DH thinks if it's a cartoon, it must be OK...)

I first explained that it's completely unacceptable and why but that wasn't enough. So, I've been dishing out the punishment. :(

ETA: I also think it was Madagascar that has characters calling each other "stupid". I preview and watch for landmines and there are some movies that I won't let them see even though they are rated G because they're such mockingbirds.

Thanks for the heads up Debi. We are on a Wall-E and Cars kick right now, but I'll preview others before we watch them.

yep! and then just when you think they are old enough to know better -nope!

Why do they pick up on things they should not say and repeat them at bad (but right LOL!) times and they would never just spout out the alphabet or something brilliant in front of others? Addison LOVES the movie Babe. I had seen it before but did not listen close enough I guess! The only word she picked up on was the word butthead - I swear how did she know how to use it? she called all 3 of her brothers and a man at the grocery store butthead! and when I told her that we do not say BUTTHEAD, she started with HIENYHEAD AND now POOPYHEAD  Our time out chair should have a worn out spot in the size of Addison's hieny she has been in it so much lately! She does not hesitate to call anyone anywhere POOPYHEAD! and then she laughs hysterically!

I agree, it is just starting!! I told Sarah that something she done was just silliness and she looked me in the eye and said, "Silliness is not a word!" [IMG] She was very sure of herself! Well, of course, I had to go look it up just to make sure it was a word...I was right it was..what a shame that I had to actually look it up to make sure that it was.[IMG]

Today Cricket told me to stop singing in the car. We have a Laurie Berkner Band CD that we listen to from time to time, and today she informed me that "it a Laurie song, not a Mommy song. You need stop singing. I want to listen to Laurie, not you!"

So yeah... major attitude here too!
