MMR shot and behavior change

The girls had their MMR, chicken pox and flu shots on Thursday. Looking back now, I should NEVER have let them do all those at the same time since it's not just 3 shots, it's actually 6 vaccines. Both girls had runny noses but their ears were clear on the day of the shots, so the doctor thought it was probably teething or a head cold.

Neither girls seemed to be feeling great, a little warm and fussy. I took them to Gymboree friday to play and they were fine. But yesterday Breena seemed worse. She has thrown up twice and had diahera twice - neither yet today. She's not eating much, but she will drink some watered down juice.

Breena has always been my ornery child. Vocal, playful, doesn't sit still for long. She is now sleepy and lethargic, not interested in playing. She won't smile much and just looks terribly sad. She just sits in my lap with her blanket. She fell asleep laying on the floor after being up for only 2 hours. DH called the doctor at home yesterday and she was almost rude to him, said she probably just has a head cold. We are taking her to a Pediatric ER today because they are open on Sundays.

I feel almost paralyzed with fear and anxiety. If these shots somehow harmed her, I will never forgive myself for letting this happen. I put off the MMR until 15 months because I was worried about it. But Breena is my big, strong healthy girl. I never thought I would ever see her like this.

Please say a prayer for my little girl.

I"m so sorry your Dr was rude to your husband, that's awful. With all the concerns going around about the MMR, your Dr. should have been more sympathetic.

You are doing the right thing having her checked out - I will keep good thoughts.

Okay, deep breath. A lot of kids have bad reactions to MMR and chicken pox shots, but that doesn't mean you have to think the worst!

Those are strong shots, and I don't think it's unusual to have the kind of reaction you're describing. Chances are that Breena does have some virus, especially if she already had a runny nose when she got the shot....or, maybe she has some stomach thing, if she's throwing up and pooping. Poor kiddo probably just doesn't feel well....

I totally understand why you're worried, and it's a good idea to get her examined -- but, I'm willing to bet that she'll be just fine. Sending prayers!

Ditto! Try to stay calm. They will pick up on your anxiety and it can make them feel worse. If you are concerned it's the vaccine, definitely have them checked out. Odds are totally in your favor that it's just a bug going around. Even if it is the MMR, of the reactions people can have, lethargy and lack of appetite are pretty run of the mill. It's never easy to see your little ones unhappy and uncomfortable but try to remember that it's more likely than not just a cold. Keep us posted!

My DD had the MMR and chic pox at 12 months and was super lethargic - just layed on me for about 36 hours. She had a fever up to 103. Both her bros were sick without vaccines so it was probably the combo of illness and shots for her. She bounced back after 2 days. Hang in there, I know it is scary and I really wondered if I had done the right thing, but it all worked our fine.

the MMR shot can have side effects up to 8 days long (or start up to 8 days later)...both my kids had the MMR/chicken pox combo shot and DD was a slug for days but it didn't start until a week later...I'm sure its the combination of the cold and the shot she got thats making her feel cruddy...

One of my friends just had her 9 month old vaccinated w/ flu shot and others. DD was throwing up for days and had diarreha. She took her to the doc and it was Rota Virus. It turns out that although the kids are vaccinated for it, 25% still get it. I know she didn't have this shot this time, but it really could just be a virus, even a serious one. Let us know how the ER went!

I agree with Becca. I also think that it sounds like they might have been getting sick before hand so you really don't know how much of this is related to the shots and how much has to do with the little bug they probably caught too. It's probably just the combination of the two.

When my oldest DD got her 12 month shots that included the MMR, she also got a high fever, became lethargic and actually broke out in a rash. Most of her reactions were listed on the sheet they gave us as possible side effects, but it lasted a few days and she was back to her ol' self. It is scary in the moment and I hope everything is ok with your girls. Just wanted you to know that we had a reaction as well and all turned out ok.

My girls got very sick/lethargic about a week after they had there shots. I took them into the dr, he ran a few tests, but pretty much said it was a reaction to the shot, to watch them and they should be better in a few. They also had high fevers, higher then they had ever had before, he even commented on that! It is scary, I would take her to the dr (or maybe an urgent care if your dr is being rude) for some peace of mind.

You mentioned that they also got the flu shot that same day, so it is possible that she had the virus in her, and when given the shot, it just brought it out. Im told that if you have some of the virus in your system then getting the shot or flumist will make you get sick right away.. but if you dont have it, it will help prevent you from getting it.
