good lord. does anyone have any tips for getting mittens on one year olds?!?!? it took me over 5 mins. to get celia's on today, and i never did get lincolns on!! and it is getting cold, but i still HAVE To get out of the house, or we will all go nuts. i just don't want their little hands freezing. is there a trick to it!?!?!? man, it is going to be a long winter. last winter was easy- put them in the infant carriers, pop them in the stroller and cover with blankets. not so much now. i'm welcoming any tips!!!!

When my oldest two were 1 I made mittens out of fleece. They were basically bags with no thumb, elastic and a drawstring, with a cord that went through the sleeves and connected to the tag. It's an easy project but if you don't know how to sew, I'm sure a relative or friend could whip them up in less than an hour. I'm going to make some a couple of sets for the boys. I also make them hats. I'm not sure this will actually help you though, I'm sorry.

We used fleece body suits with hand & foot flaps. Then we would just add layers under & blankets on top. They could never get those hand flaps off. I think I got the suits from Lands End.

If I was in a rush, I just slipped them over their hands and didn't worry about the thumbs. :)

We have mittens with no thumbs, I got them as a set with a hat at JCPenney. I get them on pretty easily, although they are not too fond of wearing them. Right now their coat sleeves are long so I just leave those over their hands when we are outside and roll it once when we are not.

I had no luck with mittens at that age. I put them in fleece coveralls and folded the sleeves down over their hands when they were in the stroller. Then when they were playing, I just checked their hands every once in a while to make sure they weren't frostbitten. Fortunately they did not really like to stick their hands in the snow.

To my surprise, this year they LOVE to wear mittens (at least at this point in the season they do!). But then Amy got distressed because she didn't want to take her mittens off, but she couldn't actually do anything (pick up rocks, etc.) while wearing them....

OK, call social services but I haven't bothered with mittens yet! I would just pull their coat sleeves down. Last winter, Ainsley wasn't even walking yet, so we didn't really play out in the cold and snow. I'll try this winter.
